Question

Wireless Networking

Asked by: julianmatz

Hi! I need to extend my wireless signal from one house to another maybe 300-400 meters apart. At present I can get a very weak signal in the middle and top floors near the windows.

My router is a D-Link DSL-2740B ( ftp://ftp.dlink.eu/datasheets/DSL-2740B.pdf ). It has 802.11n capability but I mainly need to make sure I can receive the 802.11g signal.

The spec sheet states that the router has "3 detachable dipole antennas, each with 2dBi Gain and RP-SMA connector".

I was looking at these "High Gain Antenna for R-SMA Connectors" from Syslink:
http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/HGA7S-DS_0,2.pdf

I'm not really sure about RP-SMA and SMA connectors and I was wondering if the "High Gain Antenna _for_ R-SMA Connectors" would fit my router if the router's antennas are "each with 2dBi Gain _and_ RP-SMA connector". My understanding is that RP-SMA connect with SMA but as I said I'm not sure.

Being as these antennas are quite expensive I wanted to ask that and aslo whether or not 3x 7dBi antennas would make a big difference over 3x 2dBi antennas.

I was also thinking about getting the following two products:

Linksys Wireless G Expander ( http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/WRE54G_V10_DS_A-WEB,0.pdf )
D-Link Wireless N Access Point with WDS ( ftp://ftp.dlink.eu/datasheets/DAP-1353.pdf )

The internet connection and modem/router are on the bottom floor of house A and there's a building blocking the LOS from that floor to house B so it would be best if I could relay the signal from the middle floor of house A and pick it up from the middle or top floor of house B.

Would appreciate your help.

choosing proper antenna depends the AP signal power,,
if AP less than antenna db power consumtion,,then if u used unconpatable anttena will damage ur AP
moreover, ur 300-400m distance is indoor or outdoor,,??

linksysN series is very good and stable,,I recommend,,but choose one that support upto 8db or 11db,,plus have deattachable antennas...
or go to HP products,, procurve series it's excelent and support upto 11db and has deattachable antennas
i used both linksys, procurve,,both are good,,but HP is greate

i dont recommend to use Dlink products,,i have some concerns regarding its performance ??/

Thanks! I'm not sure AP signal power and compatibility. How do I find out?

The 300-400m distance is outdoor and need to penetrate two exterior walls.

Not all my devices are 802.11n compatible yet so I'd need to work with 802.11g.

HP aren't an option for me at the moment because price is a bit steep and availability isn't great at the moment.

The Linksys products don't seem to list the forward gain in dBi.

RP-SMA = Reverse Polarity SMA also called R-SMA. Usually SOHO devices with detachable antenna have this type of connector. so you can replace your 2dBi gain antennas with 5dBi antenna the 3dBi increase will double the txpower and also should improve the RX sensitivity, if you need higher gain antennas you might have problems because the client's antennas are small and even if you "hear" the AP signal you won't have enough power to transmit.
Checkout wlanparts.com for such antennas, shouldn't be very expensive.
Also you could use a directional antenna. Also set it in 802.11g mode because at that distance I don't think you will be able to get a 802.11n connection that is sustainable.
in 802.11g you only need one high gain antenna on the ap.

Hope it helps.

Regards,

C

Thanks for your comments C!

I know RP-SMA is same as R-SMA but I take it that antennas are always female/plug and AP always male/jack ya? Or do I need to look out for that?

So what you're saying is that I should be looking for 5dBi gain antennas rather than 7dBi?

I think the Access Point I was looking at has 3x 3dBi so it would be the actual wireless router's antenna I'd be changing, which only has the 2dBi antennas by default. Or indeed if I only needed one antenna I could change one on both.

If I only need one antenna and disable 802.11n presumably it wouldn't matter which of the 3 antennas I replace? Would I just leave the others in ya?

Thanks - will look into that.

Since I won't be working with 802.11n I don't really need an 802.11n compatible access point. I was thinking about the Linksys WAP54G but read that the WRT54GL wireless router (used as an AP) might be better. Do you know if the WRT54GL would be able to pick up a defined wireless signal and redistribute it or would it have to be connected via cable - as in more like a wireless bridge?

by: memo_tntPosted on 2009-02-08 at 23:09:45ID: 23587874

linksys have wonderfull products,,and i recommend this one

version 2 WRT54G Linksys router with upgraded 7 dBi antennas

see link below

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6a/WRT54G_Linksys_Router_with_7_dBi_Antennas_Digon3.jpg

it supports the following: DMZ, WLAN, LAN (1, 2, 3, 4/DMZ), Internet

but this one doesnt have already a range extender,,u need to get annother model to be used as range extender,,as: WRE54G

but may this will cost u, depends on ur budget,,

compare prices between using router and extenders and those i sent in the previous post
