Question

Wireless connection drops

Asked by: raw_enha

I have Vista 64 Business and Intel 5300 AGN wireless on a Dell laptop.  I can connect to my wireless network just fine, but get disconnected every couple hours to every couple days.  Haven't seemed to be able to hold a connection for more than 48 hours.  All other wireless connections on network have no similar issues.  There seems to be so many variables, I'm not sure where to begin with laying out data.  This is a laptop, as a heads up, I have already disabled power management on it.  That wouldn't be it anyway, as the connection drops regardless of what i'm doing while the laptop is plugged in.  I have tried everything from playing with DHCP broadcast flags, to calling Dell (their only recommendation is to format which is stupid).

All settings seem normal as far as what I can tell from my experience. This may be lengthy, as any suggestions I may not know if they worked for 2-3 days.  Any questions though, I will get you all the possible information you need.  Thank you

Try disabling Ipv6, and use only 4

Also have you try changing the channel in your router?

Are you using wireless B, G or N ?

Have you check if there is an update to the wireless driver on your notebook

Try resetting Vista's TCP stack and try disabling parts of the global interface as well:

netsh int ip reset %TEMP%\resetlog.txt
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global chimney=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

IPv6 is unchecked, i have always uncheck IPv6 in my computer usage. However, under "Wireless Network Connection Status" it says "Limited" for IPv6 Connectivity; I am unsure as to whether this screen would ever indicate "disabled" for IPv6 or if there is a better way to disable it.  My laptop card is wireless N, my router is Wireless G.  I have updated my laptop drivers when the issue began and checked to see that they are up to date.
The channel is my router is currently set to 11, and no one else (4 other stations) are getting disconnected. Further, this connection issue seems to happen on any wireless network I connect to.  Sometimes the drop is very quickly, and sometimes it takes long.  To re-establish a connection after a drop I have to disable my adapter and re-enable it.
Do you still recommend I change the channel? Are there are any advantages/disadvantages to these channel #s (1-11)?

You don't have any 2.4GHz cordless phones in the same area as your router or your laptop do you? These can sometimes cause the problems you are having due to interference, even if you do switch to a different channel on the router.

mwecomputers:

No cordless phones. No disconnects either since I reset the TCP stack 11:20 am (although I won't know anything unless a couple of days go by)

Check if Dell has updated drivers on their site.  If they have a new version, don't install over old drivers (from experience).  Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the Intel/proset application.  Reboot.  install new stuff.  Reboot.

Yes it doesn't hurt to try changing the channel, what type of router do u have? are you using vista 32 or 64 bit

Connection dropped, had to reset adapter to reconnect.  TCP stack reset did not fix

Using Vista 64 bit.  Router is simple netgear wireless g at an office, and a simple linksys g at the home. both have multiple computers on the wireless network. in each case, only my laptop can't maintain connectivity.  This also happens when the laptop is brought to hotels; i'm going to have to rule out the channel issue as that would effectively mean networks can't support my computer in general.

I have completely uninstalled, then restarted, then installed the latest drivers (from Intel, not Dell who hasn't caught up).

Try setting it in 802.11g mode only and also specify if your connection drops even if you are not changing the location of the laptop.
The connection might drop when the RSSI decreases and the adapter tries to negociate a different conection rate. I think there might be a driver issue related to the adapter. To bypass that you can try setting a fixed rate to both the adapter (if you can do that) and the AP. This has some downfalls because you will have to set a more conservative rate. Anyway, just to debug you could try using a knoppix live cd for a couple days and see if the connection drops also using linux.
The strange thing is that you say the adapter needs to be reset. Have you looked up intel site for new/updated drivers for this adapter?/

Hope it help. Mostly guidelines.

This seems to be a regular connectivity issue between the N Band and the G band - Your Router is a G band and your adapter is an N-and - There will alyys be disconnects when you are trying to connect from one band to another... You have to get a G band card installed in the laptop.

c and handoo_shuchit:

Thank you for your added input.  To limit the variables, I am currently still trying 1 item at a time.  The new drivers so far have not failed, but because of the weekend, the laptop has only been on for a limited time.  After Wednesday EOB I'll know if the drivers have solved the problem, or if it's time to adjust the bands

Thank you everyone, it was a driver issue, and turned out I had to install Intel's drivers directly, not "Dell's latest drivers from Intel" since Intel fixed stuff faster than Dell updated their service drivers.  Also, the order was important as far as rebooting etc.
one more network issue i have over at

thanks again

have you gotten it to work yet? new drivers were released for 64bit 3/4/2009 and i still havent solved the problem. i have tried multiple N and G routers, with a linksys wrt300n running DDWRT at the lake and dlink dir655 at home, and various other routers at friends houses and coffee shops. i'm calling dell in the morning but was hoping for some updates from experts exchange first.

by: kevindd992002Posted on 2009-08-12 at 05:18:09ID: 25077869

Is this already solved? I have a Wifi Link 5300ABGN and a Belkin N1 wireless router and it seems that I have the same problem as the author. I have the latest drivers from Intel (12.4.3.9) and I get disconnected randomly, sometimes after hours sometimes after days.

The weird thing is the disconnection is unusual where my the Vista x64 Windows Wifi Icon in the taskbar still shows that I'm connected to the network, I still have the 192.168.1.x IP address from the DHCP server of my router intact, but I don't have access to anything. By anything, I mean no ping response from the router IP address, no access to internet, no ping response from other computers in the network, and the router itself doesn't see this laptop as connected to it.

What could be the problem?

by: chris98891Posted on 2009-08-12 at 17:54:45ID: 25084759

i've solved the problem in my case. i had to first download ONLY the driver for the 5300agn 64bit card. i did this through intel, the name of the file should be "ICS Dv64"

then, i uninstalled the intel control software in add/remove programs completely, including driver. after this, you won't be able to connect unless you hardwire or install the new driver, so be sure to download ICS Dv64 BEFORE you uninstall the software. all you have to do from here is install the new driver ICS Dv64, and you're set

(again, this worked for me and my friend, both with dell XPS studio 16 m1640, vista home prem 64bit, and 5300AGN)

Well, it didn't work for me. What router are you and your friend using?

by: chris98891Posted on 2009-08-13 at 09:48:56ID: 25090387

wrt300n with ddwrt and a dir655 with stock firmware for me, netgear wnr834b with ddwrt for my friend. all n routers.

by: kevindd992002Posted on 2009-08-13 at 09:50:50ID: 25090404

Ok, I got the same version and model of that router too. Specifically, what Intel Wireless driver are you using right now?

@chris98891

Are you on wide channel? What are your settings in the WRT300N v1? I have to compare.
