Wireless - verifying identity

Hello -

I have a simple netgear wireless router.  One laptop connects fine.  Another one shows Verifying Identity warning and doesn't connect for some reason.  It does connect to another neighboor's wireless fine.  I even manually configure it with WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption and still no luck.

Both laptops XP .

Any ideas?

has the router been configured for mac filtering?

On the other computer, do you have the correct SSID and the correct security key (very easy to make an error)?  Does the Netgear have MAC filtering enabled?

Then, if no joy, temporarily remove the wireless security from the Netgear and see if it connects. ... Thinkpads_User

Nope.  This is very simple Netgear WGR614v8.  I don't even think it has a mac filtering option.

Try deleting the wireless entry completely on the affected laptop, then it should find a new available wireless network, double click on it and it sshould prompt for a new key. If there has been any manual configuration done it will remember it each time it tries to connect.

As I noted, try without security to see if that is an issue. It is possible (been there) that the card is not compatible with the router. Try going to the Netgear site and upgrade the firmware in your router. That may help you. .. Thinkpads_User

same thing with no security.  SSID and no MAC filtering...

Can you rename the SSID ? then treat it like a whole new connection on each laptop? Make sure broadcast SSID is on and you wont have to manually enter it. Does your laptop/wireless card have it's own conenction software, instead of using WZC, sometimes that can help (and gives you a better indication of signal strength and quality)

Latest firmware.  I think the signal is not stable so it cannot connect.  Weird.  Sometihng interfere with wireless.

Just double checked a manual for WGR614v8 - it does have mac filtering (aka wireless access list). Confirm it's switched off before going any further. thinkspads_user is right and it would be best to make sure all firmwares and drivers are the latest versions, but could also add more complexity if the problem changes. Best to do as little as possible 1st and rule out as much as possible.
