Question

Netgear WNDR3300 Wireless G not broadcasting

Asked by: uhme

Hi Everyone,

My wireless G on my Netgear WNDR3300 dual band N is not broadcasting. I have this issue with old one so I returned it to Netgear and they have just sent me a new router, the same model and everything working but my wireless G is not broadcasting. Seem like a dejavu. Any idea what the setup might be?

Thanks,

So, you are saying the Wireless N is working, Wireless G is not, right?

by: sarangk_14Posted on 2009-09-29 at 07:54:22ID: 25449714

Have you followed the User Manual here: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNDR3300_SM_12Nov07.pdf

Page 3/7 lists the LED status to check whether the appropriate modes are enabled or not.

Check these and revert.

Warm regards,
Sarang

Also search the EE site for "Netgear WNDR3300". It should provide some good insights as well.

Warm regards,
Sarang

Yes, the wireless N is working and wireless G is not working. The LED in the front is amber on the 2.4ghz and blue on 5ghz. May be this model is a lemon. I had that first one for about 6 months and the G stop working so I got an RMA and return it to Netgear, and they sent me this new one. I set it up and the G is working.

Sorry, but could you please clarify? First you said Wireless G is not working and at the end of your post you are saying the G is working.

Regards,

Sarang

Have you tried configuring the router in Type 1 Wireless mode? (2.4 GHZ supporting - 802.11n/802.11g/ 802.11b)

Also, Wireless N will be visible only to the wireless client adapters supporting dual band. If you have b/g adapter, you'll only be able to access the Wireless G SSID.

I would also like to ask what client adapter you are using.

Regards,
Sarang

Sorry, I meant the G does not work.

I have these settings:
270mbps @ 5ghz and 54mbps @2.4ghz

I have not try setting type 1 like you just mentioned. I will try it tonight.

Thank you.

Also check whether your Wireless Client adapters support wireless N and 5GHz

I have 2 HP laptop using wireless N and 5ghz. The rest of my devices are wireless G 2.4ghz @ 54Mbps.

Thanks for your help. I will try the type 1 configuration.

For some reasons I see the wireless G but the connection drop immediately. It comes visible and then drops off.

It's on and off. I left my original setup. I can't find the type 1 configuration.

Have you checked/ followed the User Manual here? ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNDR3300_SM_12Nov07.pdf

by: sarangk_14Posted on 2009-09-29 at 20:35:24ID: 25455464

What I meant by Type 1 was only the 2.4 GHz wireless G enabled.

Also, did you configure the router using the Wizard or Manual mode?

by: uhmePosted on 2009-09-29 at 21:57:15ID: 25455732

Oh, ok. I've done that and then the 2.4ghz led green and all my wireless N did not connect.

I configure the router through manual setup.

The wireless G is on and off.

Thanks for your help.

Ok. I understand the Wireless N did not connect, but did the Wireless G clients connect?

I m trying to pinpoint the probable area of concern here.

by: uhmePosted on 2009-09-30 at 07:27:07ID: 25459194

sarangk_14:
Good Morning,

I set it using this mode 270Mbps @ 2.4Ghz and tried it as 130Mbps @ 2.4Ghz, and none of my G or N devices connect to it. So I put it back 270Mbps @ 5Ghz & 54Mbps @ 2.4Ghz, then my N connected but the G was on and off intermittently. Two of G devices connected for a few seconds and then disconnected on and off.

Sorry, I'm just frustrating with this router.

Thanks.

Hi,

In your original question you had said that the AP is not broadcasting the SSID.
As of now, are your wireless G devices able to see the SSID?

I should have asked this before, but could you please provide the following information?

- The O/S of the machines (all of them, whether connecting or not)
- Whether you are using Windows Wireless Zero Configuration utility or the Wi-Fi Client specific utilities
- What authentication mode and encryption you are using (Open, WEP, WPA/ WPA2-PSK (TKIP/ AES), WPA/ WPA2 Enterprise.
- Whether the Systems as well as the drivers for all wireless devices (AP and clients) are updated.

Warm regards,
Sarang

by: uhmePosted on 2009-09-30 at 19:24:54ID: 25465558

At first I did not see the SSID and I can see it on and off.

All my wireless G devices can the SSID but don't connect to it. Like I mentioned the SSID comes on and off.

-The OS on one machine is vista 64 bits. The rest of the pc are xp.
-I think I use whatever was default during the pc boots. How can I tell if I'm using Windows Wreless Zero Configuration utility or Wi-Fi Client specific utilites.
-WPA-TKIP
-All drivers are up to date as far as I know because I went through Windows update.

Thank you,

Hi,

W.r.t Windows Wireless Client;
Right-click MY networks icon, select properties; You should see all your networks connections; right-click the wireless connection you want to check and select properties; In the Wireless Networks Tab, if you see a check-mark against "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings", you are using windows wireless utility. If the checkmark is not present, you are using some other wireless client utility.

Could you please download a utility such as netstumbler? (it basically allows you to view the wireless signal quality for various WiFi networks within your machine's reach)

I would like you to check using the utility whether the AP is not visible because the signal levels drop to very low or because there is no signal at all.

Warm regards,
Sarang

One of wireless adapter is Netgear  WNDA3100 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB 2.0 and is using its own wi-fi uility, should I change it to use Windows Wireless Zero? Not sure if this has anything to do with the G being broadcasting.

Thanks,

by: sarangk_14Posted on 2009-10-03 at 10:33:11ID: 25486058

In the Wi-Fi utility for the Netgear adapter, you'd typically have an option similar to wireless survey which eill allow you to monitor the signal strenth and quality of the connection.

Can you monitor the above-mentioned parameters and revert with the observations?

Also, is the problem occuring on a particular O/S or is common?

One more thing, If your machines have a built-in wifi adapter, have you tried connecting the same over 802.11N?

Warm regards,

Sarang

Using the netgear usb adapter utility wizard on my xp machine, I can see both G and N.

Using my HP laptop I don't see the wireless G.

I think I'm having enough of this Netgear model. Thank you for your time and help.

I will go out and purchase a new device.
