Question

Need to connect two Linksys WAP54G together wirelessly

Asked by: rohitccnp

We have a Windows 2003 Domain based setup in our School and from the network switch an enthernet connection is going to Linksys WAP54G (IIBM-AP1) Access Point which allows network connectivity to wi-fi enabled laptops.

Now we need to add one more Linksys WAP54G(IIBM-AP2)  in our setup to extend the coverage of IIBM-AP1 but want to keep the ssid as same and WAP2 password as same.

Tried second WAP54G (IIBM-AP2) to connect to IIBM-AP1 using AP-Client Mode, it could detect the IIBM-AP1 with ssid as 'wifi' and was able to connect to it from IIBM-AP2. The ssid of IIBM-AP2 was automatically reset as 'wifi' which was on IIBM-AP1. The IP address of IIBM-AP2 was also kept on the same lan network 192.168.1.245 (IIBM-AP1) and 192.168.1.246 (IIBM-AP2) and both have gateways as 192.168.1.2 (of our Windows 2003 server).

Laptop was able to detect 'wifi' ssid but its not able to connect to it and keeps saying connection timeout. Kindly note that the Firmware version of both Access Point is the same and the

Please let us know what is wrong and as said earlier we don't want to have a wired connection between these two APs.

If you have them using the same SSID try putting them on separate channel IDs, as in 1, 6 or 11.
They need to be 5 channels between each AP.

Also the cable for your IIBM-AP2 AP does not need to come directly from your IIBM-AP1 AP. You may just plug the cable anywhere as long as it will lead back to your switch or what ever you have so it can still get to the server/rest of the network.

Hi,
I could not understand your situation correctly ru trying to establish wireless bridging.
As far i know Linksys wap54g is home based one it has very limited settings.
If you can just make a simple network diagram it will be much easier to understand.

Praveen

Previous replies appear to have assumed you're connectiing AP2 with ethernet cable. That *would* be the preferred method if it's possible... still, I don't think that's the setup you currently have.

And, it sounds like you have it *almost there* wirelessly, but not quite.

AP Client mode on AP2 would relay the wireless signal to/from AP1 via the ethernet port on AP2... i.e. rather like a bridge, but on the same network. You could connect a switch to AP2's ethernet port and connect laptops or desktops to the switch like that, but not wirelessly.

I think you want Repeater mode.

Be aware if there's insufficient signal, there's nothing to 'repeat'. So if you cannot connect to AP1 with a laptop from the location of AP2, then AP2 probably can't connect to AP1 from there either.  Make sense?

Solution which worked for me was having the second AP to connect to the first one wirelessly using Wireless Repeater mode and it worked smoothly.

I suggested using Repeater mode in http:#25709081

Repeater Mode helped to connect two APs wirelesslessly.
