Question

Two wireless routers acting as one

Asked by: neild123

Hi All,

I have just installed a new Belkin F5D8232-4 v1000 router. All is fine, installed at 192.168.2.1. I can use this router and connect to the internet sucessfully. I have told it to allow ips from 192.168.2.2 to 100

In one of the ports at the back I have plugged my older Linksys wirless router (it's a LONG cable) and turned it on.

I can connect to the second router but cannot connect to the internet through it.
I used to be able to see the config page of this router on 192.168.1.1 but now this doesn't work.

My questions.
1.Any idea why the second older router wont connect to the internet.
2. Why I cant hit 192.168.1.1 anymore

thanks in advance for any help

My first thought would be that you probably want to reset the old router back to factory settings. This is usually done by pressing a button on the back of the router.

This will set its IP address back to normal, usually 192.168.1.1 (maybe different though). Once you have done that conect your laptop to the router and then manually set your ip address to whatever subnet the router is on.

From there you should be able to get into the router to modify the settings. My guess is that you wont want this to act as a router any longer but rather only a wireless access point. You will probably just want to disable the routing features and disable DHCP also.

Once you have that done you should  be able to plug the network cable into one of the non internet/uplink ports. It has to go into one of the regular network ports. This will allow the main router to do its thing but also have this secondary router acting as a wireless access poiunt.

192.168.2.0 and 192.168.1.0 are different subnets and you wont be able to talk between them without specific routing rules.

Set your routers up like this:

Belkin: IP 192.168.2.1, DHCP 192.168.2.10-192.168.2.100
Linksys: IP 192.168.2.2, DHCP OFF

Connect one of your Belkin LAN ports to one of your Linksys LAN ports, you should not be using any ports labeled WAN on the Linksys for this configuration.

You will need to factory reset your Linksys and plug it directly into your computer if you can't access it.

Also when your setting your ip info on the linksys make sure that you set the belkins ip address as your gateway.

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies, unfortuanatly still no luck.

I have plugged the Linksys directly into my laptop (and into nothing else) and pressed the fatory reset button and can see the router's startup page on 192.168.1.1 and ping it but as soon as I set its IP address to 192.168.2.2 and it reboots I can no longer ping it. I have to reset and restart it again for it to respond back on 192.168.1.1

by: xxdcmastPosted on 2009-11-01 at 17:56:36ID: 25716656

When you change the ip address on the router and reboot you will need to statically set your IP on the laptop to 192.168.2.x before you can reach the router again.

OK, we are getting somewhere.

The Linksys is up and running on 192.168.2.2. From my work laptop I can now connect to the linkysys and ping what ever I want wirelessly. It is an XP machine but I have no access to any ip config stuff so I cannot tell how it is set up. I can see that it is running a Dell Wireless 1510 card though.

But my Home laptop is confusing me. I can ping 192.168.2.2 so the wireless connect is fine. But I cannot ping 192.168.2.1 (the Belkin). If I change the network to the Belkin all is fine (all be it with lower connectivity). Change networks back and again "Destination host unreachable".

I have tried both static and non static ip configs to no avail. It is a Running Vista.

Any ideas?

connect to the linksys, open a command prompt and run ipconfig /all, paste the output here.
then connect to he belkin and do the same.

Sorry, made a typo in the previous post and I can't work out how to edit it.

the first ipconfig is logged on to the Belkin. the second is logged on to the LINKSYS.

by: nicr4wksPosted on 2009-11-04 at 21:42:42ID: 25747027

All of that IP information looks correct and is what I would expect.

So your work laptop is working correctly, but your home one is not? I'd check your home laptop for any software firewalls etc that could be hindering network access, also for any other network related software that could be installed.

by: neild123Posted on 2009-11-05 at 12:27:10ID: 25753592

No software installed other than Vista. Brand new installation. And I can ping the Linksys!! I'll turn off windows firewall (if its on) and try again and get back to you.

Thanks for your help so far.
