The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Palm internet connectivity
Tags: Palm OS, Palm, Palm Tungsten E2, Error:PPP timeout (0x1231)
I am struggling with acquiring full functionality with my new tungsten E2 through my home network.  Specifically internet connectivity.

When I attempt to connect to the internet the Palm goes through its initializing and signing on then before the sign on completes I receive an error: Error:PPP timeout (0x1231) .

Bluetooth is connected through a D-Link DBT-120 dongle through a USB 1.X connection on a Dell Inspiron 4150 w/Windows XP, SP2 home edition.

I am able to pair the laptop to the Palm, Hotsync via Bluetooth works, and I am able to send files to the Palm from the laptop (mp3s for example).

Stop here briefly for a history lesson, I did have some issues installing the dongle, sorry for the additional reading but it may be germane&.

See: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Wireless/Standards/Bluetooth/Q_23150995.html

Additional interesting tidbit:  In the laptops network connections  I can see the Bluetooth connection.  However, even after the successful pairing and demonstrated capability mentioned above, the Bluetooth connection shows, Type=Personal Area Network, Status=Disconnected, Device Name=Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network).  Im suspicious of the apparent lack of PAN capability and my inability to connect to the internet but not sure if that is the place to try and fix (not sure where to begin anyways).

OK esteemed experts.  Theres the challenge.  Can we get my internet connection working in my Palm Tungsten E2 through a Bluetooth enabled, shared internet connection?

The links SysExpert provided seem to cover your problem nicely so will wait to see if that resolves it.

Searced all over this forum and the web as well.....noticed there were some people who had success using softickPPP for this problem.

Installed the free trial version allowed softickppp and the palm network settings to detect automatically and w/ specific dns/ip settings.  Still the same results.

Still even after all of this, my Bluetooth connection in Network Connections on the PC has a status of Disconnected.  Shouldn't the PAN associated w/the bluetooth connection show connected or bridged to the internet connection I'm trying to share?

Thanks for the pointers so far.  What does everything think we should try next?

Start with a New user profile in Windows with Local Admin access.

Double check that Sync works, and then also check firewall issues.
Are you using ICS /

I hope this helps !

Trying to keep this simple, do you have any other internet connection accounts on the palm?
Make sure you have selected the local are network as the default?
Type=Personal Area Network, Status=Disconnected, Device<< enable and check the permissions and settings from here reboot your computer
any firewalls? disable the firewall tempory

1.  Downloaded/installed the PPP software.  It worked...after a simple restart of the computer....for a short while.  Only used the trial version...the trial ran out.  Then the fun began all over again.  I purchased the software from Softick and now the fresh install won't accept the confirmation code emailed to me when I purchased the software.  Softick PPP won't function (sp install) on my computer again.

Thoughts...I was honestly leary of the third party software required to establish a fairly rudimentary capability.  Does anyone else have any other ideas besides the PPP software?  How about security concerns over the software?
I've contacted the Softick support folks asking them to explain why my purchase code doesn't work.  I hope they get back....I'm not holding my breath though.

Any new ideas would be appreciated.

Ok...everything works now.  I'm a little dissapointed w/needing softickPPP as a solution but it appears to suffice for now.  Biggest concern is little company, third party software needed to enable what should be a basic capability.

Key discovery for anyone that falls on this thread with the same problem....when registering softickPPP w/palmgear make sure you pay attention to the palm device name.  I don't like giving out more info than I have to and put N/A in the box.  Apparently palmgear uses this identity to generate the authorization code to install the software.  Once I figured this out when it came time to activate the software, I put "N/A" in the "registration name" field then the purchase codes loaded and I was off and running.
