Unable to use Bluetooth

I cannot get the Bluetooth to operate on my Sony Viao SZ5N-B laptop. The bluetooth icon shows up in the systray when enabled and shows in device manager but will not connect or allow connection from any other bluetooth device. On checking Services the Toshiba Blutooth Service is set to automatic but is not started. When a try to start the service I get an error 1053 and the following - The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. When searching for other bluetooth devices it finds them but when a connection is attempted a report of Bluetooth not started is displayed. I have manged to pair with a mobile phone but then no further bluetooth services where available between the laptop or phone. The see each other but thats it.
