Question

uC->static IP using GPRS.

Asked by: interted

Hello,
My problem: I want to send data from a uC to a static IP address using the GPRS technology. I read all the relative posts in this forum and I ended up to three posible solutions: Solution 1. Use a common GPRS module (such as MC35, Farcom I2D etc.) and create the PPP/TCP/IP stack via hardware. Solution 2. The same and create the PPP/TCP/IP stack via software (what kind of micro to use?). Solution 3. Use the Easy GPRS solution provided via firmware in the Telit GPRS module. Does anyone tried the third solution? Does EASY GPRS work properly? And what kind of software I have to use on the other side (PC connected to a static IP). Is it possible to get a static IP on the GPRS network or I am only able to send the data to a fixed computer (connected for example to a LAN). That's all. Thank you.

I am in the user group of option number 3.  The IP addess in German GSM networks is dynamic. I could not believe that any opeator offers fixed IP addresses.

For most of the GPRS operators, they will provide you a dynamic IP addresses, just like using a fix-line Modem. Actually, the GPRS module behaves exactly the same as the fix-line modem.

Therefore, you can ask your system to connect to anywhere you like, if you know its address. Please note that you cannot use a hostname unless you have also implement a DNS query in your uC.

There is product that can do what you have mentioned, plus all source code released with the kit.

Yes I use it and a couple of friends too.

>Does EASY GPRS work properly?
It runs nice without problems.

> And what kind of software I have to use on the other side (PC connected to a static IP).
That depents on you. You can type a couple of commands with Hyperterm to send an Email.

> You can send an email to your email provider. There is an example how to do that on
http://www.gsm-modem.de/smtp-gprs.html .

If I am right, then there is no way to get a static IP in a GPRS network

If you know the IP adress then you can connect to the PC.

Suppose that instead of a connection between a remote device and a fixed computer I want to create a direct link between to mobile wireless GPRS modules. I want to use again one of the solutions stated above (Easy GPRS, TCPIP Chip etc.). I understand that one way to achieve this is to use a interval server such as e-mail or HTTP server (ex. send an e-mail from one module and receive it from the other). Am I right?
Is it possible to achive a DIRECT data connection between the 2 modules with interoperable ip addresses and each time send the dynamic ip from one to the other with sms?
Thank you for all your answers.

You are right. For send of email you use the SMTP prototocal and for receive POP3.

You must not use SMS. There are services that translates your dynamic IP address to a name like www.xxxx.yyyy.com.
Then your device always have the same URL but with dynamic IP adress. On that way you PC with dynamic IP will can be connected all the time as well.

And if I want to use uControllers instead of PCs? Is it possibe and which internet service I have to use? One "dynamic IP translator" service I found uses a small program that runs under Windows environment to register each time the new IP. Maybe my questions are silly but I want to know how I can establish a direct data connection between two MCUs using GPRS and without an a interval server.
