Question

Nokia 6620 Cingular GPRS Settings

Asked by: dphelp

I have a Nokia 6620 phone from AT&T wireless that I am trying to get to work on the Cingular network.  I have successfully unlocked the phone and have been using it for voice calls with no problem, but will not connect to the Internet.  I have worked with Cingular wireless represenatives in the store.  I have called their tech support line and gone through the same thing and no matter what settings I try it will not connect.

Below are the settings that are currently in the phone:

Connection Name: Cingular Wireless
Data Bearer: GPRS
Access Point Name: wap.cingular (lower case)
User Name:  WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (UPPER CASE)
Prompt Password: No
Password: CINGULAR1 (UPPER CASE)
Authentication: Secure
Homepage: http://device/home

Advanced Settings-
Phone IP Address: Automatic
Primary Name Server: 0.0.0.0
Secondary Name Server: 0.0.0.0
Proxy Server Address: None
Proxy Port Number: 0

I have had this phone for several weeks now and would like to get this to work.  If this is not possible I understand and will get a different phone.  Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Try several things.

1) if you want to stick with WAP try it on TDMA using CSD:
dialup number: 18472549271
Gateway IP: 66.209.11.61
Auth type: Secure
User: WAP@CINGULAR.COM  (no gprs, all uppercase)
Pass: CINGULAR1 (uppercase)

2) if you'd rather stick with GPRS, try adding GAteway IP 66.209.11.61 .

3) If you're a data connect services subscriber, the DNS servers are 66.209.10.201 and 202 .  If you did subscribe and still can't get GPRS let us know here, otherwise I'm not going to post all the data connect stuff.

4) Of course you have a valid, non-duplicate SIM from Cingular. Right? Just checking.

I do have a valid SIM from Singular.  It works fine in my Motorola v551.  I think the Nokia is a slightly better phone and would rather get it working if possible.

There is nowhere for me to enter a gatway IP address on the Nokia 6620.   I did try the two DNS servers and I got the same results.  It did come back with a message this time though: "No Gateway Reply".  It looks like I need to enter a gatway address, but there is nowhere to put it.  In the advanced settings there is no place to enter a gateway address.  Is this because I have an AT&T image on my phone and since they do not require a gateway address there is no place to provide for that??  Is it possible to re-image my phone with a Cingular setup??  Just reaching here...

BTW..I tried the dialup number also and it said, "connection failed".  I'm assuming becuse there is no place for the gateway address.

Thanks for your input.  This has been driving me crazy for about a month now ;-)

Hmmm well if you've stumped Cingular, i mean the ISP can't help you with that phone, you could always check HowardForums or WirelessAdvisor forums. Somebody in one of those places is bound to have worked that phone alot.

It's possible the older phone doesn't have a spot for gateway anywhere in it's UI.

My last suggestion: pull the battery out and leave it out for a day or so. Maybe that will wipe out any residuals.

I have tried the forums you mentioned.  They basically had the same information.

Unless there is any new information I don't think it's going to work.

Thanks again for you input.

I should mention this: Carriers have to certify phones and modems for their network. Any device that you want to use on their network must go through a certification process. The carrier can choose - or not choose - to support whatever devices they wish. It's a variation on the good old days when the Ma Bell owned each and every phone in the United States. If you look around you will find older rotary dial phones stamped "Property of AT&T." No kidding. They are still out there. I know because I have one of them!

Nokia's web site says specifically the phone is supported for data use as a modem, either via infrared, Bluetooth, or USB. NOKIA SAYS IT WORKS. Meaning, Cingular has got current subs using the phone as a data modem and it works. If it works for them and DOESN'T work for you, make this a business issue with Cingular. They do want your business, right?  Push 'em really hard to trade the phone or fix it.  Use one of your business contacts and try to escalate this - someone somewhere in some company (either Cingular or Nokia) knows how to erase the phone back to zero and flash it correctly for Cingular. I'm assuming it's flashed since you can't find it in the UI anywhere. It does look like a nice phone BTW. Don't give up!

I also have a 6620 and spent 2 days trying a dozen solutions as well as 2 hours on tech support.  Nothing worked.  Finally after spending the day searching the internet and trying everything found the correct settings for the Nokia 6620.  You had everything correct except for the proxy settings found under advanced settings.  My working GPRS settings are as follows:

Connection Name: MEdia Net
Data Bearer: GPRS
Access Point Name: wap.cingular
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Prompt Password:No
Password: CINGULAR1
Authentication: Secure
Homepage: http://device.home

Advanced Settings

Phone IP Address: Automatic
Primary Name Server: 0.0.0.0
Secondary Name Server: 0.0.0.0
Proxy Server Address: 066.209.011.032
Proxy Port Number: 8080

Best regards,
James

I agree with "jfergiee / James", above.

I also have the 6620 and my settings are exactly like those from "Best regards, James" above.

Like James, I had to search several sites as Cingular support is not the best source for obtaining this information.

I just talked to Cingular a few minutes ago, apparently after almost two month they still do not have a quick access for the information provided by jfergiee. The Rep. took more than a hour to finally access most of that information and still missing the advanced proxy setting portion. He said he had to access third tier support for those information. If I hadn't found this site, I would probably still be on the phone with him now. So thank you for the information you posted here. Much more helpful than Cingular.
