Question

GPRS communication with an IP non dynamic

Asked by: IndustriaSigrama

I would develop an application that may communicate two devices using Rs232. I will connect them to a GPRS modem. I found a service that offers IP non dynamic, I will use what they call a corpotarive APN that may allow me to get an IP that will not change.

My question is this:  I start my application sending AT commands to get the modem connected to GPRS, but after that how would I use the IP to connect to the other modem, would it be using AT commands. I got confuse because I do not get the idea on how to develop an application that use IP if the connection to the network is done by a modem.

I would appreciate any comment

>>I start my application sending AT commands to get the modem connected to GPRS,

This is not an easy task...... It depends upon your modem's model and make. For most of GPRS modems this is not possible.....
The alternative is to use Dial-Up service of Windows to dial the GPRS connection. This is explained completely in the following question where I helped another asker. It also tells you how to transfer data/file from one system to the other system....

I am using the GSM modem listed on http://www.gsm-modem.de/gsm-modem.html . It contains the GPRS module listed on http://www.roundsolutions.com/gsm-modem/index.htm .
At command list:
http://www.roundsolutions.com/pdf/Telit/GM862%20Technical%20Docs/GM862_AT%20COMMANDS_r0.pdf
Search for EASY GPRS in the command list.

After I have got my dynamic IP address I forward it by CSD (modem call) or by SMS to the second GPRS modem. Other way is to forward the dynamic IP to some kind of server. Every modem registers to some kind of server and the server stores the dynamic IPs all GPRS modem. If some modem would like to connect an other modem, then it ask for the IP on the server.

Regards
Meff

Since you know the IP address of each unit, your only problem seems to be how to transfer the data.
I assume from what you wrote that you have the succeeded with the GPRS PDP context activation.

The next step is to use some kind of data transport protocol (like TCP ord UDP).
Those protocols are implemented in some GPRS modem and they are also AT-command controlled.
Refer to your modem datasheet to see if it has internal support for TCP/IP

An other option is that you use an external protocol stack in the connected equipment.

Please get back with more information so we can get further with this application
