Question

How to connect to a remote PC which has GPRS modem attached?

Asked by: Advoco

Hi all,

Looking for some info on connecting to GPRS enabled modems.

Basically I want to connect a Siemens MC35i Terminal to a PC and be able to connect to that PC remotely. The SIM in the MC35i Terminal will have a fixed IP address. How difficult is this to do? Any tips appreciated.

Try www.logmein.com   It is remote desktop control similar to gotomypc.  They have a free version which should be all you need.   This gets around any type of port forwarding that you would need to setup to use something like PCAnywhere or VNC.

As long as you have a connection which has a static public IP, you should have no issues connecting to it from anywhere.

To test it out, connect the PC to the terminal, make sure your IP conffigs are set right and then try to ping / connect to the public ip from some external machine on the network.
Remember to turn of the firewall, or allow ICMP requests (ping) or open the port you need to connect to.

Once this is done, you should be able to connect as and when required, via Remote Desktop or any other utility, or even ftp, telent into your machine.

thanks for suggestions thus far.

I've been talking to other people who say the MC35i Terminal is not the best as it has no TCP/IP stack for incoming connections.

Think I might have to fond some other hardware. Perhaps a Sarian Systems router would be the best.

gprs is a protocol which is meant for IP traffic. When the connection is setup, your device IS alloted a certain IP address. This could ve public or NATted by the service provider.

What about to replace your Siemens modems to the terminal as below:
http://www.roundsolutions.com/gsm-terminal/index.htm
Benefits:
- You will get an embedded TCP/IP stack and can send "Hello World" from your application to the other application (The Siemens has no embedded TCP/IP stack).
- You can run Python scripts inside the modem. Based on Python any device with serial port can access to Internet cheap and easy
- You will get access to the world wide biggest user forum for GSM / GPRS / UMTS / GPS / Bluetooth applications free of charge by buying a starter kit (4000+ members)
- You get your support quickly and have not to wait that someone jumps in a thread
