Sending SMS with a Siemens A50 mobile phone

Hi. I have a Siemens A50 mobile phone and I want to know if it supports AT commands related to SMS. I've tried a lot of other AT commands and it works.

If the thing takes AT and ATZ and ATE then it probably takes AT+CMGL and so on. Try AT+CPMS=?

 Hi BigRat. It really takes all the AT commands you mentioned, but the AT+CMGL, AT+CPMS and any other command related to SMS the mobile phone return an ERROR message.
  I really need to know if it works with the A50 model, so I can decide if I have to change my mobile phone model to do what I want.

I don't know the model (just the TC35/S35 series). Perhaps it has such an interface to enable it to be a modem. Try AT+GCAP.

I find it a little hard to believe that the phone is AT enabled yet won't send SMS messages. Try AT+CSCS to see what codes it supports.

 Hi BigRat. I tried the AT commands AT+GCAP and AT+CSCS but the answer from the mobile phone was the same : ERROR.
  A tried the AT commands to SMS in a C45 Siemens and the answer from the mobile phone was OK. I think the problem is in the mobile phone (A50) that doesn't support these commands. Anyway, thanks for the help.

OK. Strange, it seems you can only use the thing as a GSM modem!?

Are you sure that the account related to the SIM card in the mobile supports SMS sending/receiving?

Yes. I'm sure that I can send and receive SMS. I've already tested it and works. It doesn't  work when I try to do this through the serial interface as I mentioned before.

Is this perhaps a problem with the PIN number? Have you entered the PIN number BEFORE using the phone's AT commands? Have you tried using AT+CPIN to enter the number before trying the SMS commands?

No BigRat. I didn't try to enter the PIN number before using AT commands. I'll try and I hope you're right. Thanks for the help.

Hi Hillermann,

it's really strange that your A50 supports only a few AT commands... usually, Siemens implements the GSM modem interface quite accurate into their mobiles, so I don't believe it doesn't work ;-)) In one of my projects, I tested many cellphones and GSM modems, but unfortunately not yours. Maybe you can try my program with your phone... it creates detailed log information, so after that, we'll know which SMS related commands work and which don't.

Since my program is commercial now, I don't want to advertise for it here and get kicked in my butt from others ;-), but a google search on 'sms-maker' will point you there.
