Hi Frannie,
the 6210 doesn't have a built-in modem, it uses Nokia's proprietary protocols FBUS/MBUS. In order to make it understand AT commands, you'll need a modem driver. This driver is usually included in the Mokia Data Suite and will add a new, virtual COM port (i.e. COM3:) to your system. This new port can be used to send AT commands. If you have the driver installed, connect to the new COM port directly with 19200/8/n/1 and you should be able to send AT commands.
Hope this helps

i'm sorry it is only now that i got the chance to check my question for i'm not connected to the internet at home. anyway, i have replies here and i'm hoping you're still there to help me.
ei meff! you're right i should have received "OK" after sending "AT". but in the first place i can't even send "AT" through hyperterminal. but you understood my problem. =) thank you for the links to freeware SMS. i'm checking it now and i think it would help.
ei amit 1978! i already did what you advised.. setting File> Properties> Setting Tab>ASCII Setup > (Check Box) Echo type charecters locally. still, characters are not printed in the hyperterminal text area. =(
ei owitte! your comment really worries me. are you 100% sure 6210 doesn't have a built-in modem? because i have downloaded softwares which could send sms and update phone logos and they're doing fine with my phone which is directly connected to COM1. they could update my 6210's logo and they could read and send sms. and the SMS Transceiver (SMST), which Meff advised me to check (http://www.wrankl.de/SMST
Hi Frannie,
don't panic :-), I'm not absolutely sure that the 6210 deosn't have a built-in modem. I'm developing a program to send and receive SMS and I tested various Nokia model, and most of them don't have. That's why they need a modem driver in order to understand AT commands.
And the fact that it works with other third-party software doesn't necessarily mean that it is a modem. Some programs use Nokia's proprietary protocols (FBUS/MBUS) to communicate with a mobile device.
Anyway, I did a search on EE and found some articles where people said the 6210 does have a built-in modem, so I think it should work. What are your communication parameters in HyperTerm? I read you must set it to 9200/8/n/1, hardware flow control. If this doesn't work, try varying the baud rate.
If you want to check out my program (it scans automatically for attached device), a search for 'SMS-Maker' on Google should point you to the right direction. My program is commercial, so I don't want to advertise here. It also has a DEBUG mode with detailed log functions, from which you can see how sending AT commands work.
If your 6210 still refuses to answer, maybe there's something wrong with the cable or the COM port. But I don't think so, because you said it works with other programs...
Hope this helps

ei oliver! thank you for letting me know about your SMS-Maker. i haven't checked it yet 'coz its too big for a floppy. but i'd definitely find a way to get a copy of your evaluation version and i really hope it would work.
and i hope you'd still be out there when i have new questions to ask after testing the SMS-Maker.
ei oliver!
i already have an evaluation version of the SMS-Maker. however, my nokia 6210 cannot be scanned by the application. the error "Error (0): - " keeps on being issued in the session log. but i have read in the help file that the application was already tested with this nokia model. and so now i have questions to ask...
1. do i need to install a modem for my phone first? even with terminal emulation programs?
2. from LogoManager for Nokia Phones i learned that my cable is DAU-9P and not DLR-3. their setting for DAU-9P uses either fbus or mbus and both worked fine but setting the application to use DLR-3, it won't work. and so i confirmed that my cable is DAU-9P. does this pose a problem? do i have to use DLR-3 in order for my phone to be detected by your SMS-Maker?
3. and how would i know if a cable is DAU-9P or it is a DLR-3 by just looking at it? 'coz their pictures look almost the same. and when i bought my cable it doesn't have any label on it.
i really hope you would continue to help me with this. thanks in advance.
Hi Frannie,
although you sent this messages also by email and as private message in my forum, I'll answer it here, only ;-))
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the different cable types for Nokia phones. I have two Nokia cables here and they both work with my program and various Nokia models (6110, 6210, 7110), but there's no label telling which type of cable they are.
Nokia's Logo Manager definitely uses their proprietary protocols FBUS/MBUS and should work with both type of cables, I guess. But this doesn't help much, because the communication method is different. In order to use your mobile with SMS-Maker or any other terminal application (like window's HyperTerminal, the phone must understand the standard GSM AT command set. Otherwise, you won't be able to communicate with it.
I did some research on Nokia's website and found the following page:
http://www.nokia.com/nokia
There're some docs about modem setup and a modem setup for download available, and as far as I understand, the modem driver is included in this setup. I don't remember if I downloaded ind installed this before the 6210 worked with SMS-Maker, but it's worth a try.
After installing it, check your device manager for a new COM port and the modem setup for a new modem, both should be installed with the setup. Then, scan the new COM port with SMS-Maker or use HyperTerminal to test it (this is described in SMS-Maker's help under 'Requirements'.
Please keep me informed about your results and don't hesitate to contact me in case of any problems :-)

ei oliver!
i already checked the site you suggested. i downloaded almost everything that site offers. i have already installed the modem but sad to say, still, my phone wasn't detected. during installation, there's 1 wizard which scans the com ports to detect the phone but my phone wasn't detected. but i could still install the modem after choosing com1 as the port it will be used to.
i have also read the docs there. one was about using the phone as a modem with the hyperterminal. in the connect to wizard, the "6210(cable)" already appeared but still i can't type any character in the text area.
it's the same when using the SMS-maker. the phone cannot be detected.
i'm now thinking that i really have a DAU-9P kind of cable. what i plan to do is to find a DLR-3 cable.
ei oliver, you have really helped me a lot. but if you still have any suggestions there please let me know immediately, ok? thanks.

Hi Frannie,
I now have a 6210 here and tested it with the following results:
(1) I downloaded the driver for the 6210, installed it and got the same result like you with two different cables. Don't know what kind of cables I have, they're not labelled. But one of them works with a 6110 and 7110.
(2) I nistalled the Nokia Data Suite 3.0 which also includes a modem driver and with this driver (and using virtual COM9:), I could connect to my 6210 with the same cable I used under (1). The other cable didn't work at all. SMS-Maker also found it, but couldn't read the model (manufacturer worked, though). But many other commands didn't work, the mobile returned an error. For example, I couldn't send a message or read the address book.
My conclusion: This model is not compatible with standard AT commands or the command set implementation is not lousy (as with some Ericsson phones, too). I don't know how this phone found its way to my compatibility list, but I guess someone told me it works, maybe over IR.
I'm sorry that I don't have better news for you :-( Maybe you get your hands on a different model. I myself tested a 6110 and a 7110 successfully, but most newer phones should work, too.

Why not to play with some freeware for SMS first and then to have a look on Hyperterm. ducts/free bee.html SMSTransce iver.html
