Asked by: lharts

i have a nokia 3410 F/Mbus cable
i have a nokia 7210 with serial cable
i have a nokia 6230 (via bluetooth)

whenever i start a connection i set all the details as im asked adn connect to a com port...
i know this because hyperterminal displays 'connected 0.00.00'(incrementing counter) in the bottom left corner.

however if i try and type anything to the screen i nothing is displayed, and if i turn on the 'echo typed characters locally' i can see when i'm typing but still no result is displayed.

i have tried a number of different set ups to no avail. am i doin something totally obivous wrong? or has anyone else come across this problem??

thanking everyone in advance....

Baud rate has to be correct.

F/M-bus uses 115200 and other devices tend to default to 9600 or 57600. Try these baud rates.

Depending on your cable you may also have to enable/disable hardware flow control.

I am doing a simmilar thing with DKU-5, which is actually a serial cable with convert to usb.  Apart from Baud rate (Bits/sec) you need to set the following:

- Bit output to 8 Bits
- Emulation to VT100 or viewdata
- Character set to ASCII
- Function keys acting as windows keys
- Try different Flow control

This should solve the problem!

Emulation should strictly not be VT100 but rather TTY or ASCII since the GSM07.07 specification does not support the VT100 standard, but since VT100 is basically identical for all 7-bit data which can be entered from the keyboard this will probably work OK as long as you are not trying to send data or SMS in PDU mode.

The ASCII character set does work for the text part but the character set used is actually the GSM set or the IRA set, but this also is so similar and something like hyperterminal does not support these so you should just keep this in mind if you see unprintable characters or if an SMS from your phone contains different characters when displayed on the screen of your PC.

Function keys are not used at all, but setting them on windows does allow you to cut and paste wit ctrl-v so this is advisable, it does however not have anything to do with the connection.

If you have the baud rate correct and the flow control correct you should be able to type AT and get OK back. If this does not happen something may be wrong with the cable.

If Hyperterminal shows "Connected" and counts this does not indicate a successful connection, it shows that you can communicate with the UART. You can test this by unplugging the cable and trying to connect, you will find you connect 100% and it counts withou a cable plugged in, so do not misinterpret this, it only means you can talk to the UART. The DTE side of the port may even be broken!

The most common problem with communicating to these phones is baud rate and/or flow control. The F-bus cable e.g. has a MAX233 level converter in which derives its power from the flow-control lines, so it has to be correct for the cable to work.

F-bus is 115200 but you cannot type AT commands over F-bus. It is a binary standard and if you type you will not get anything back on the F-bus. You should be able to talk to the 7210 via the serial cable though, but try all the baud rates you have and only type return, AT and return to test on each. Flow control setting on Windows can go wrong in a lot of places as it is not properly implemented. If the port default is hardware and you set the connection to none it still uses hardware e.g.

Thanks for all your help guys, unfortunately i'm still not sorted....

Fisman, you've given me a lot of information, but no matter what i seem to do, i still cant connect or see what i type, unless i activate echo locally. and you were right but the connected timer being inaccurate, it counts even with no phone connected :-/ I am currently trying to connect using a dku-5 cable and a nokia 7250 as edin suggested, however now i'm gettin a different error saying unable to open com11, check port settings.

com11 is the port that the phone connects to teh nokia pc suite over, so i'm assuming that its also the one that hyperterminal should be using.

i really appreciate any further help you can offer!

Hi,

COM11, that doesn't soud good to me!  Try uninstalling everything, and then installing a driver first!  If you have Nokia PC suite installed, take that down as well!  For use of DKU-5, u need to install a driver first!  Nokia PC suite has its own connection, so disconnect it before using Hyper Terminal!  Try all this, and then use Hyper Terminal!

Also when you connect using Hyper Terminal, note that you don't make a new connection!  When a window for the new connection opens, you press cancel.  Then you go to Files->Properties, and you make a choice of the COM port, and the settings we told you above.  When you apply and close Properties window, just type AT commands, it will connect!

Edin, i had driver installed already! however, after uninstalling everythign and re-installing the dku-5 driver that works!! it stil works on com11 (that part is a puzzle to me too!) i had to uninstall, my bluetooth dongle, nokia pc suite and teh dku-5 driver. its now workin, but i have no BT or nokia PC suite, so hopefully everything holds up after i put them back on!!!
thanks for all yer help.
