Question

GSM Modem Setup

Asked by: aimehdi

Ok Guys,
Here is my 3rd question on the same subject. I really really need some help here. Here is my scenario;
We need to send on-demand SMS messages to US cellphone users. Currently, It is still a very early stage so, we can't really go to an SMSC directly. Hopefully, in the next 6 months, we will be in this situation so, let's not focus on that at this point. Also, we don't like the idea of paying someone $.02+/SMS message. The next best solution is to use GSM Modem. There are certain things we need to understand before we start to implement it.

GSM Modem: Wavecom is what we are looking at but not sure exactly what model we should get.
We need a SIM card after we get the modem. Can we just go to a telco and ask for a SIM card. How does it get configured with the telco?
After getting a modem and a SIM card configured, we need some kind of software that can communicate with the modem to send and receive messages to and from the modem. What are the options?
Once we have that figured out, the last piece of the puzzle is to be able to connect the software with a web application.

Please help.
Thanks

>>Also, we don't like the idea of paying someone $.02+/SMS message :

If you use a GSM modem - its the same as using a cell phone.  You will need to buy a SIM card from any operator (from any local shop) and insert it into the modem - so for every message to be sent, you will have to pay the required amounts. ($.02 or whatever)
Your best option would be to buy a new SIM card with a bulk SMS pack - do some research on the options available.

>>How does it get configured with the telco?

There is nothing as 'getting it configured'
The GSM modem is the same as a cell phone minus the display, ringtones etc - all other functionality is similar.
You have to connect it to a serial port on the computer, and insert a SIM in it the way you would in a cell phone. Sending SMS money and config wise would be same as sending SMS via a cellphone.

Once we have that figured out, the last piece of the puzzle is to be able to connect the software with a web application.

For this I assume you would be using JAVA. You need some kind of JAVA APIs which would help you communicate witht he modem.

http://smslib.sourceforge.net/

This is a good place to get your library for the same.
You need to use the library to initiate communication with the modem - examples are provided.
You can then call the corresponding classes as required through your web service.

On the other hand, I have worked extensively with this, so I can provide you with a jar that can do the part of communicating with the modem and send/receive messages over HTTP. Your job will just be to send the messages in the correct HTTP format.

I got Wavecom Fastrack and plugged it in to the serial port. For power supply, all I got was trimmed wires at the other end. How would I go about giving it the power. I wish I knew more about how these modems connect before I bought one off of eBay for testing.

keyurkarnik, It will be great if I can plugin the jar file and communicate with the modem over http. Can you please tell me more about this?

Thanks
