Question

How to send SMS in java

Asked by: gublooo

Hello,
I have a website written in Java and I want to add the SMS feature. This website is based in India. I've seen several indian websites that are having this feature.

When I search on Google, I find many companies that ask you to purchase certain number of sms for so much price. They even offer Java API's. But this option will work very expensive for me.

The other option suggested to me was using Kannel open source sms gateway. It seems even after getting through all the trouble and setting it up - u still have to configure each cell phone provider like AT&T or tmobile etc in kannel so that kannel will know how to send sms to that provider. So in your java app - you will send the sms to kannel and kannel will send it to the respective provider.

I've also heard people mention that you need to attach a GSM modem and what not. And I'm totally confused.

Has anyone been able to setup kannel or any other open source gateway or for that matter any application in which they were able to successfully send and receive sms. What is involved and how do I go about it.

Here I'm talking about a large ecommerce website in which 1000's of sms messages will be sent daily.
Thankyou for your help and guidance.

you need some sort of provider whichever way u go (to get access to sms network). even if you use your own modem you'd need an account with a gsm network provider

no no, its not that hard for set up SMS. you don't need to setup sms model, or some complex configuration, use provato to comunitcate with you service provider and send and receive SMS.

All you have to do is to go to service provider and get the rights to use their service and then attach their system to you provato interface via which you can easily send/recevice SMS.

you can find details here

I think sending sms thru service provider also cost u  alot comparing to this point that u can develop ur
own sms service.by using any programming language and one GSM modem and embed it in your website.
think about java libraries which can help u:

Here is a code that can be used to send SMS's from your GPRS device.
This code was modified from 'SimpleWrite.java' example taken from
Samples of API Documentation. Beware that this code has'nt been tested.
So use it at your own risk.

import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
import javax.comm.*;

public class SimpleWrite {
static Enumeration portList;
static CommPortIdentifier portId;
static String commands[] =
{"AT+CMGS=1","AT+CMGS=\"9292912345\","Hello there"};
static byte[] newline[]={(byte)13,(byte)10}
static SerialPort serialPort;
static OutputStream outputStream;

public static void main(String[] args) {
portList = CommPortIdentifier.getPortIdentifiers();

while (portList.hasMoreElements()) {
portId = (CommPortIdentifier) portList.nextElement();
if (portId.getPortType() == CommPortIdentifier.PORT_SERIAL)

{
if (portId.getName().equals("COM1")) //your comm port
{
try {
serialPort = (SerialPort)
portId.open("SimpleWriteApp", 2000);
} catch (PortInUseException e) {}

try {
//get the output stream
outputStream = serialPort.getOutputStream();
//write the commands string to the output stream
for(int i=0;i<commands.length;i++)
{ outputstream.write(commands[i]); // write command
outputstream.write(newline); //write new line
}
outputStream.write(messageString.getBytes());
} catch (IOException e) {}
}
}
}
}
}

You have to make an agreement with a SMS Service Provider to send SMS via their gateway, after it you can send sms from their gateway using your username and password.

In development section, you can use the providers API' s this can be JAVA API or other languages, but the most efficiency one is use XML. You use just only ONE line code to send SMS, thats all :)

For example i use the same thing in TURKEY, i use TURKCELL' s gateway...
