The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Vista + Mobile Broadband + VPN = Doesn't work!

Asked by timm31 in Virtual Private Networking (VPN), Windows Vista, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)

I am having a really difficult time figuring this one out.  The goal is to use our Sprint Mobile Broadband cards to VPN (PPTP) into our SBS 2008 server, which is behind a Watchguard firewall appliance.  I am able to VPN in this method on all of my Windows XP machines.  I am able to VPN on the Vista machines if they are connected to seemingly any network outside of our own.  VPN from home, for example, on the Vista machines works flawlessly.  However, when I connect using a Mobile Broadband card, I am unable to connect to the VPN.  I am able to reach other websites and surf the net via the card, but VPN will not hook up.  When I try to, it pauses on "Verifying User Name and Password."  It sits there for a minute, then says it couldn't connect.  If i try to have the Sprint software auto-connect my VPN, it does the same thing then throws an error 806.

I have verified with Sprint that they are NOT blocking VPN traffic and everything on their end should work fine.  This seems to be confirmed by the fact that i can VPN successfully using the Sprint card IF AND ONLY IF I'm running Windows XP.

I have attempted to turn off UAC and the Windows Firewall.  Currently there is no A/V software on the client machines (I know this is bad practice).  Still, it produces the exact same error. I am dumbfounded as to what could be causing this or even what to try next.  Seems like the problem is Vista somehow, but i cannot figure out how.  Please help!!

Thanks!
