Question

Wireless running slow

Asked by: aando

Hello, I have a client that is constantly running slow on the wireless he has two Access Points, a Cisco and a 3com. At first I thought the problem was with one of the AP's or something causing a large amount of packet flow on the AP's. But when I check the logs everything looks fine, but this is were it gets interesting, I changed his DNS from the server to a Open DNS server and then the wireless starts running faster. Now keep in mind that the LAN machines run just fine it is only the wireless tablets. I also have another client that is not running wireless and their DNS does the same thing, but they sometimes get random  404 errors and they can do a refresh and it come up. Does any one have any ideas?

IMHO you need to define "slow" and what they are doing that is slow.  If changing the platform that the DNS server is running on makes it faster, that makes it sound like name resolution could be having problems, not that there is a network bandwidth issue.

Of course, if you have 25, 30, 40 or more devices connected to a single WAP, that is a different issue and I wold expect it to be slow.

Have you made sure your two AP's (and any others in the area) are using non-overlapping channels?

Assuming it's 802.11g, there are three non-overlapping channels: 1,6 and 11

Try filtering some sites or do a blocking, where u can prevent users from  P2P downloading as this eats up
a lot of bandwidth

check if theres any thing which effects the frequency of the wireless connection like (microwave oven)

I have verified my channels, my Cisco is running set to run least congested channel which is channel 1 and my 3com is on channel 10. So I know that is not the issue. There are only a total of about 6 users on these two APs so I know that's not the issue, and we are currently using a fortigate firewall for web filtering  so I know they aren't using the torrents and sucking up the band width. They are also not using cordless phones, but the microwave maybe part of the issue, I am going to check that out. Any other suggestions?

Try getting netstumbler
http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/
and letting it run for a few minutes. See if there are any other WLANs that it can pick up on the same or neighbouring channels as yours. If so change your channel to one elsewhere in the range so it is not too close to any others.

This will reduce interference.

None at all show up. Only this one. Some strange things going on here.

1. Seems like wireless is fine on the network but when it tries to go to the web it is extremely slow. The workstations that go to the web are fast.

2. If we power cycle the AP it is fine to the web for a while and then dies again.

Thanks, ME

Since you mentioned that changing DNS servers seemed to speed things up, it just could be that name resolution is having a problem.

Random 404 errors are a part of life on the Internet.  We have two DS3s and we still get 404 errors.

Can you go to http://www.speetest.net and pick a server near you and do a speed test from both a wired and a wireless?

With 54Mbps wireless and doing encryption, the best you will most likely get is about 15-20 Mbps.

You may want to install something like wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org) on one of the wireless computers and do a packet capture or two to see if you can tell if it is all Internet traffic or just some of it.  You mentioned that changing DNS server improved things, it just could be for some reason the wireless devices are having problems doing name resolution, which will make everything slow.

Noticed on the speed test that one of that WAP's was weak.
