Question

No WLAN In Device Manager > Network Adapter

Asked by: bear1

I can't hook up to my router and it worked great before. I do have an older laptop with Windows ME in it and that still hooks up to it. My notebook is an HP dv9420us and today I downloaded the Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista here. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-58904-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3439690&os=2093&lang=en.

That didn't work either. I'm working with a tech from HP and everything he sends me is copied and pasted without the real answer to my problem.

We need a bit more info, Bear1.

Can you 'see' the WLAN device when you search for nearby devices? If there's an open WLAN near you, try to connect to it. This will determine if the issue is on your PC or your WLAN.

While you're at it, check your WLAN device to see if someone else has access to it (you did change the default password, right?). They may have MAC filtering turned on.

Is there an unknown device in device manager?

by: bear1Posted on 2009-06-18 at 11:31:09ID: 24660369

No, there are no networks that it can find. The Linksys router works fine as I stated in my question about the other old notebook. It is secure with password.

by: bear1Posted on 2009-06-18 at 11:32:14ID: 24660379

They are all bluetooh devices.

by: guydemarcoPosted on 2009-06-18 at 11:32:37ID: 24660384

Are you using a third-party tool to manage the wireless? If so, try switching over to having Windows manage the device.

by: bear1Posted on 2009-06-18 at 11:37:11ID: 24660434

No 3rd party tool is being used. I've just followed the advice from HP and haven't used windows to fix it. Have never done that.......

1) Do you get a link between your router and your (W)NIC card?
2) Are you set for DHCP on your home router?
3) Are you using encryption keys for your WLAN? If so, are the keys entered into the "NICs" properties?

by: zweiPosted on 2009-06-18 at 11:42:43ID: 24660498

I have a solution, kind of... Don't use Vista.

No but seriously it should appear as an unknown device or with a red cross on it. Perhaps the motherboard drivers need reinstalling? Can't think of anything else...

by: The_WarlockPosted on 2009-06-18 at 11:42:52ID: 24660503

I fogot to mention, maybe you need to enter the mac address if you are filtering by "MAC".

by: bear1Posted on 2009-06-18 at 11:47:55ID: 24660569

The Warlock,

There is no link between the built in card and router. I don't know what DHCP means. It is encrypted, but there is nothing that shows up. Linksys isn't found on my system either. I wonder if Service Pack 2 changed everything.

by: bear1Posted on 2009-06-18 at 11:50:56ID: 24660602

Oh, yes there is a red cross on the globe.

Under Network Adapters, why doesn't WLAN show?

by: bear1Posted on 2009-06-18 at 12:45:52ID: 24661101

After checking to see how I was connected to the network, this is it. NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller. That must have overwrote the original settings from Linksys.

I did try using the windows vista connection and that didn't work either.

by: bear1Posted on 2009-06-18 at 12:47:44ID: 24661114

Don't give up on me now...........

by: zweiPosted on 2009-06-18 at 14:55:20ID: 24662088

"NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller" This is LAN not WLAN, if I'm not mistaken.

I think perhaps you got a faulty network adapter (?), it should detect a card automatically.

This notebook is over a year old and you believe the internal adapter stopped working? So replacing it is the next step?

I'll make some calls and see who can replace it.

by: guydemarcoPosted on 2009-06-19 at 08:54:24ID: 24667499

I would suggest opening the laptop, pulling and inspecting the WLAN daughterboard, the re-installing it.

by: zweiPosted on 2009-06-19 at 09:08:05ID: 24667642

If it has warranty on it still just turn it in and let them replace it. If not.. another alternative is using a wireless usb adapter.

guydemarco also has a point... could be that it's loose or similar and just needs to be reinserted.

Two good answers and I'll let my son try this Sunday on Father's day when my children come down. One question? What USB wireless adapter will work with my Linksys WRT54G?

Can you recommend one?

by: guydemarcoPosted on 2009-06-19 at 09:34:31ID: 24667870

Any should work, but I tend to stick with like devices -- Linksys USB for a 54G router.

That did the trick plus a dirty fan that needed to be cleaned out. Runs nice now.
