How do I configure a time server in SBS2003 to keep my computer clock accurate

I feel I might have got the wrong end of the stick with this time server business.  I thought I could synchronize my server's clock with a reliable time server anywhere in the World.  I have configured this as per the MS KB articles but I am still getting the following event log -

  W32Time 29 16/10/2006 23:04 1
The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 960 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time.

I went back through the following article to check my settings and am confused by step 4 under the section entitled "Configuring the Windows Time service to use an external time source"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042

Specifically the bit that says "Note Peers is a placeholder for a space-delimited list of peers from which your computer obtains time stamps. Each DNS name that is listed must be unique. You must append ,0x1 to the end of each DNS name. If you do not append ,0x1 to the end of each DNS name, the changes made in step 5 will not take effect."

I presume you don't actually type the word "Peers" into the registry setting but it doesn't explain where you put this space-delimited list (does it go directly into the registry setting?)

At present, I now have under the Parameters key and under the NTP Server setting "time.windows.com, ox1" - I presume this is correct so why do I get the following events -

I think you're making this more complicated than necessary.  I've always just used the NET TIME /SETSNTP command.  Also, make sure if you have SBS premium, you have a rule setup in ISA to allow SNTP protocol out from the server.

Thanks dons6718, I ran that command and it was successfull.  Not sure what it did or how it contacts a time server but we shall see what happens.

Are you sure you have no time server specifically set anywhere?
When you say you ran the commend, did you include the time server you want to connect to? Something like Net Time /setsntp:time.nist.gov  or any of the time servers listed in this article? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262680   You can use the Net Time /querysntp command to check what is currently set for your SNTP server.

OK, I mistyped the netserver parameter into my original comment, I did actually have time.windows.com,0x1 - I used Jeff's time server's link to find two UK based time servers and then used Don's Net Time command again but this time adding the two time servers.  On checking the NTP Server parameters key, I now have them both in there but with a comma between them and no 0x1.  So they look as follows - "chronos.csr.net,ntp.my-inbox.co.uk"

I stopped/started the w32time service and ran the following command

w32tm /resync /rediscover

But got the following error "The computer did not resync because no time data was available"

I appended the ,0x1 to the time servers and ran the above commands again but same error.

Thanks

I am still getting the following critical error -

The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 960 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time.

I have upgraded the points to 200 on this case because it is obviously harder to resolve than I thought.

This is an exact cut and paste of the entry -

chronos.csr.net,0x1 ntp.my-inbox.co.uk,0x1

Which is exactly as you suggest and I still get the error.

Hi Jeff,

Thaks very much for this information, I have checked all those values and only needed to change the Parameters\NtpServer   value to chronos.csr.net,0x1 81.168.77.149

Could you please clarify the value for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer

I have the following keys available -

AllowNonStandardModeCombinations (1)
DLLName C:\WINDOWS\system32\w32time.dll
Enabled (1)
InputProvider (0)

Many thanks for your continued assistance.
Same error this morning -

The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 30 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time.

All service packs present and correct
Not sure I remember anything about a router connection when running the internet connection wizard - which step and component is that?
The time service is running and automatic.

Thanks
Well, it was worth a guess... but just to confirm that you are now only receiving an Event ID 29 and not 38 and 47 anymore?

I have just changed my ntp server to 212.38.64.25 to see if that makes any difference.
I'm not sure that would help since 212.38.64.25 isn't an ntp server.

Is this the same SBS you are also having email issues with?  If so, I'd suspect that you may have DNS problems.

Please post a complete IPCONFIG /ALL from the server.

Jeff

The e-mail issues I am having relate only to my machine and not to the server.

Here is my ipconfig -

Well, there's your problem.  You need to remove the WINS IP from your EXTERNAL NIC.

Then rerun the CEICW.

This is also probably the cause of your email issue, since Exchange is heavily reliant on WINS.  Your comment that it's only your machine and not the server doesn't make any sense... all email goes through the server, so the issue has to be related to the server.

If you want to post your workstation's IPCONFIG over in http:Q_22038314.html, we can review that as well.

OK, removed WINS IP from external NIC and rerun CEICW (with do not change option on each step).

Will see if it works in the morning.

I have posted my IP on the other case as you asked. (tested e-mail, still a problem - see further notes on case)

Many thanks.
This issue was still being worked upon, which is why no comment had been added.  However, only yesterday I tried a different time server and made changes to my ISA to allow UDP on port 123 (though the entry was there, it was only TCP) - I then ran the w32tm /resync /rediscover command which was successful.  I was waiting to see if the event ID came back and it appears that so far so good.

I appreciate Jeff's help on this so will split points between various comments he posted, though please note, it appears I have resolved the issue by using a time server that works and made changes to ISA to allow UDP on port 123.
