The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

To give you a start, navigate through your Windows Start button through Programs> IBM iSeries Access for Windows> Emulator> Start or Configure Session. Click the [New Session] button. Give the device a name such as 'Ppbratlnd'. Under "Type of emulation", select the Printer radio button and press [Setup...]. You can possibly leave everything as default, so just press [Enter].

That's pretty much all there is to it. You can start and end the writer on the AS/400 through the [Start] and [Stop] buttons on the PC session. You can associate the session with a PC printer through the Printer setup... under the session's File menu. You open the printer session just like you would open a display session; while it's active (and Started), you can move spooled files into the output queue and, as long as the writer is active, the spooled file should print wherever you configured the printer session to print.

That's the short story. See how far you get and post more if trouble arises.

Tliotta, Thanks for the reply, But I am interested in the as400 side to creating a new writer and outq on the as400.

When you go through the procedure that I outlined, you should see that an output quese was created on the AS/400 and that a writer was started. Once the printer emulation session is started, you start and stop the writer by using the [Start] and [Stop] buttons in the printer session window.

That seemed to be what you wanted. However, perhaps you don't want a PC-controlled emulator session. If you're asking about the remote writer support instead, then I _think_ you will need to make sure you have properly configured your PC to act as a printer server. (But that's a Windows question, not AS/400.)

In order to send to a remote printer from OS/400 or i5/OS, you would use the SNDTCPSPLF command. TCP/IP is the supported network protocol. As long as you have an IP address and a printer queue on your PC that can accept spooled files from remote systems, there shouldn't be any problems. Opening your PC so that any other system can send spooled files through it has potential issues.

Note that this does not necessarily involve creating a new output queue on your AS/400. Spooled files on any existing *outq can be sent. Nor does it involve starting a writer; any job can execute the SNDTCPSPLF command.

If you want, you can set up a remote *outq by using the CRTOUTQ command and filling in the various remote system parameters. I've never seen anyone do it for a general PC-connected printer. Usually, IP addresses change as DHCP hands out addresses over time; so DNS name resolution must be considered. But I suppose it could work. And if you have a static IP address, then that's not a big problem. I can't tell you much about what parameters to specify when you do CRTOUTQ because I have no idea how you have configured for printer serving on your PC.

When you create a remote *outq, you will need to start a remote writer to move spooled files from the queue over to the PC. You use the STRRMTWTR command to start the writer and associate it with the *outq.

pbratlnd,

Just set autoconfig to *YES, and start a CA printersession.
When you look to the created profile(s) you will see how it has to be created :)
