The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Poor performance in web application when used after idle period; performance greatly increases after 1st use

Tags: IBM, WebSphere Application Server, 5.0, System i (i5/OS v5r4)
We're doing some eCommerce development for a customer, and have a demo environment set up running the following:
IBM WebSphere Commerce v5r6 (AdvancedB2BDirect store front)
IBM WebSphere Application Server v5
on System i 525 (7100 CPW, 2x1.9GHz, 16GB)

What we're experiencing is when the commerce instance (which for the purposes of this question can be considered a standard web application) sits idle for a while, say a few hours, and a user starts to use it, the server takes a huge amount of time to serve the requested pages, the first time they are requested (~50 seconds for the logon page, for instance).  Once a page has been requested and returned, the performance is as you would expect (>1 second for most pages, 2-3 sec for some more advanced ones).  Once at least one person has been in the system, the pages that they request then run very quickly for them and any other user for a period of time.  The problem is this initial response that we are seeing after the server sits idle, with no one on it, for a while.

We have batch compiled all of the JSPs in this web application, which did improve performance overall, however it did nothing to help with the high initial response time issue.  There isn't that much running on this serveras it is brand new, so we know that the overall computational power of the system isn't the problem here.  Our settings for the app server and applications are basically out of the box.  Everything on this system has the latest patches and PTFs applied.

Has anyone seen this before, or have any ideas on what we could do or where to look to resolve this problem.  The tech at IBM we've been working with suggested that it is most likely related to settings in WAS or the System i itself, and not the WebSphere Commerce application that we happen to be running.
