The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Installing Mac os X tiger on external firewire drive

Asked by pmac38CDS in Apple Operating Systems, Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), Appletalk

We recentlly got a new mac g5 dual processors 2 gig ram all the bells and whisltes at work.  Im a pc expert but by no way a mac expert.  The drive came partitioned as one big drive with the newest mac X tiger 10.4.2 installed on the internal drive.  This is my problem........I'm trying to install from the same set of disks that came with the pc a fresh copy of tiger on my external iogear(#ghd135c250) firewire drive.  I've tried it os journaled not jourlnaled and unix.  I've also erased and not erased.  Each time it says its done and it needs to restart and then when it does it hangs up with the grey screen and does nothing.  After awhile it sounds like the machine is going to take off because all the fans come on high speed which i've read happens after a kernel panic.  Ok so I turn off the drive and reboot and the system comes up fine.  I go look at the firewire drive and it looks as if everything was installed fine.  So I went in to the startup drives and noticed that on the internal mac drive it says 10.4.2 and on the firewire and the dvd install cd it just says 10.4.  So i select the firewire and restart it with the same gray screen.  Ive tried holding down the alt key to get the list of startup drives.  When i do that I get the mac internal and the dvd thats still in and never the firewire drive.  The odd thing is i can never do anything on this screen. It just sits there with the mouse that looks like a watch with the hands spinning on it.  It will do this forever and i have to reboot.  The only thing i notice differnt is when i look at the internal drive most of the folders have little pictures or colors on them and on the firewire drive they are just plain folders.  I'm attaching part of the log file which really doesnt mean much to me and was hoping someone might have some ideas.  I see a few things like the firewire drive shows its not mounted and some other things I just dont really get.  I only pasted the part of the log from after i changed the startup device.  Thanks in advance for any help and just ask if you need more info.  The log is below...

Thanks
Phil
