The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Newbie Mac .dmg install question

Asked by salvagbf in Apple Operating Systems, Apple, Appletalk

Ok, so I just got a brand new iBook from work... but I'm a MS/Intel guy and am just starting to get my feet wet with Macs... so be patient with me...

I'm trying to install Firefox. So I go to getfirefox.com and download it.  It downloads as a .dmg file, which from what I gather is a disk image... fair enough, though that concept confuses my poor MS angled mind...

So I double-click this Firefox1.5.0.1.dmg file and it pops up asking me to accept the license agreement, ok... Now I have an icon on the desktop that appears to be a Firefox drive... and a window opens... so I double-click the Firefox looking button in the window and it launches Firefox.  Yipee. So now I figure I'll close firefox.  And because I hate clutter, I figure I'll eject the firefox disk so it's not on my desktop anymore... Now I can't find firefox... shouldn't it have loaded into the Applications folder? I do a search and I only find a settings folder in Application Settings... no actual program (except for the .dmg I downloaded)... Also, if I try to drag the Firefox disk icon to the Applications folder it only creates a shortcut.

So here's my issue.  What on God's green earth is this icon on my desktop that looks like a firefox drive? Why does it appear as a drive to be ejected? Why doesn't this thing just install into my applications folder? Why, when I eject it, do I have to go back to the silly .dmg file and accept the license agreement again just to start Firefox? Should I expect all Mac applications I download to behave this way? Is there any way to install Firefox so it looks like all the other apps that came with this Mac so I can just drag it to my Dock to click on when I want to run it?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help... and patience.Start Free Trial
