asked on

How do I setup a Mac to use Sonicwall Netextender?

I have only basic knowledge of Mac's so I need some help.

OS version = 10.7.2
Netextender Version = can't remember, but its the latest version downloaded by accessing the download through https://sslvpn.demo.sonicwall.com/cgi-bin/portal#
VPN Box = Sonicwall SSLVPN 200

Problem description:

I've installed Netextender with no problems onto a Mac running 10.7.2, when i attempt to connect to my work Microsoft Server, it authenticates, and then connects.

The Transmit and Reciveve counters then freeze on about 200 - 300k, and my Internet connection also freezes, no errors at all, launching Safari just gives me a blank white page with no error.

The instant I disconnect Netextender, the web page loads and all is well again.
When I view the Netextender log all is fine, with no errors.

My first thought is that Netextender is somehow overruling the local internet settings with the VPN ones, but I have no idea where to look or how to solve this.

Any help and guidance would be very much appreciated.

It sounds as though your VPN connection secures all networks and possibly that you have IP overlap i.e. your LAN IPs match the remote LAN.
Have not use the Sonicwall Netextender, but see whether you have an option to not set the VPN IP as the default route/gateway.

i.e. in terminal window prior to connecting to your work run netstat -rn to get the current routing table on your system.
Then after you connect to the remote rerun netstat -rn and see whether the default route/gateway not reflects the VPN IP.

http://www.sonicwall.com/downloads/SonicWALL_SSL-VPN_2.1_NetExtender_Guide.pdf
refer to page 30 to see the menu option where you can check what routes the VPN sets.

The settings might be pushed down from the VPN server so you would need to check with them.

Thanks for your help so far, I'll be looking at the pesky thing today.  Mac's are foreign to me so the smallest task seems to be overly time consuming :(
Ok ... switching off the split-tunnelling seems to have allowed the connection to be stable.

I can now connect and access the Internet locally, while maintaining the VPN connection.  PROGRESS!! :)

I can ping my office PC's and servers, but I cannot establish a remote desktop connection, any suggestions where i might look for the problem.  All my windows PC's can access remotely without any configuration client side.

I'm starting to go off Mac's quickly :(

Thanks so far fellas!

Thanks carl, apologies for the delay.   My next plan is to try updating the remote desktop as you've suggested.  Thanks for the help so far!

I'll update the thread as soon as I've tried it.

Steve
