To launch an application, OS would first do some housekeeping such as create a process control block and add it to scheduler queue, allocate some memory, initialize page tables, load executable in code segment, initialize environment and registers and finally transfer control to the program.

Once the program is running it needs to pass some requests such as I/O etc to the OS. Application cant directly perform these operations - OS should do them on behalf of the application. All such operations are done through a well defined interface called system calls. This requires switching from user mode to kernel mode - a context switch
