Can't Open Files Downloaded With Google Chrome
I have a Dell Laptop running Windows XP Home with a 120 gig HD. Recently I started using Google Chrome as the web browser. I noticed where any file downloaded with Chrome seems to generate the Access Denied or Can't Determine Type error message when I try to open the file after downloading. This can be various files (pdf, jpg, etc.).
The same files can be downloaded with IE or FF and will open properly.
Any ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks,
ET

what version chrome are you on? was there a recent upgrade to chrome? maybe go back to an older version. do you still have issues? this then rules out whether chrome is the issue or not.

HRL ... Thanks for the reply ... Tried all three of your suggestions to no avail.
rocki ... I'm running the latest version of Chrome (6.0.472.63).
After more testing seems like this could be a disk problem or something in XP. Here is what I've managed to narrow down.
Using Windows Explorer I can navigate to several folders on the local C:\ drive and try to delete a random selected file that has NOT been downloaded with Chrome. Sometimes I will get the Access Denied Error (see attached photo). The only way I can delete the file is to use a little Unlocker utility program.
Seems like all of the files I download with Chrome will end up like that meaning you can't delete or open them.
Thanks,
ET

I use unlocker too, a very neat utility. does unlocker tell you what process locked the file? most likely chrome?
so it seems perhaps chrome did not finish downloading or something preventing it from saving from the temp folder it uses.
I wouldnt of thought this would be a disk problem since you said it works fine on other browsers.
did u try a older version of chrome? maybe go back a few versions.
have you tried downloading say using another windows profile?

Well, Unlocker says "No Locking Handle Found" but it will delete the file.
Only reason I'm starting to believe it's more of a disk problem because I can encounter the same problem with files that were not downloaded with Chrome.
It's just that every file downloaded with Chrome seems to generate the Access Denied error message when trying to open it or delete it.
What's strange is I use a separate PDF Driver and created a PDF from a worksheet file. When I try to delete that file I can get that error "Access Denied" sometimes ... not every time though.

are you logged in as admin here? I wonder if perhaps permissions on that folder might of got messed up? can you double check the permissions? Try a one level folder like c:\temp. Make sure you got full permisisons and see if you can then open a file from there.

Yep, tried that upfront. It's a Windows XP Home machine. I am admin and the folder permissions are ok.
It's kind of strange because the more I test, I can find files in various folders that cannot be deleted. I've run check disk and defrag on the drive still to no avail.

perhaps its time for a malware and virus check?
as well as running a chkdsk
are these locked when in safe mode?
suggest you do backup your stuff first

try disabling google update service and logging to safe mode
or install recovery console and delete the files

OK, thanks all for the solutions provided. Looks like it was a permissions problem in Windows XP Home edition as originally suggested by rockiroads. I've never really had to change the permissions for folders/files on this machine running XP and didn't realize I needed to get to the Security tab for the folder/file while logged in Safe Mode.

Thanks all for your solutions.
Cool, finally resolved.

I had previously tried your first suggestion using a C:\Temp folder.
I read the info in the link and tried a few things still to no avail.
Maybe it is a HD issue or something. I will keep looking and trying different solutions.
