Changing file permissions in cpanel to 4755

Hi,

I need to change the file permissions on a folder I want to use for a cron job - and have been told that I can do this in cpanel. Have navigated to the File Manager section, but the only options I am presented with are the standard CHMOD properties.

Can someone help me set these permissions without having to write Linux commands on the command line?

Click on the "Perms" column, and edit the permissions. I was not, however, able to change it back from 4644 to 0644 using this method, I had to go to the command line to change it back, so beware. I don't know if that has to do with my cPanel setup or cPanel in general.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry about this - not that familar with cpanel - when I am logged in, I can only navigate to Files > File Manager.... When I am logged in as the root user, I cannot see a column marked Permissions/Perms either.... sorry!

I've attached a screen shot, just be sure we're speaking of the same thing. Also, what version of cPanel are you using? There should be a left side column with a list of items and paths, one of them should be cPanel following by the version.

Hi,

I am usign 11.24.4-RELEASE

I can access the same menu as your screenshot - it's just that if go to "change permissions" on the folder I want to do this for I can only undertake the standard properties - no way to set 4755..

If you click the "change permissions" button, that's correct, if you click on the "Perms" column for that folder, it because editable and you can enter the value you want.

Hi,

Many thanks for getting back to me. Really helpful - thank you - I didnt realise you could edit these values directly!

However, I thought I needed to edit the permissions for the folder for which I wanted to work with on the cron job - when I try to set the task up, cpanel is giving me the same message: /usr/bin/crontab permissions are wrong (0755). Please set to 4755.  Can you help out on this?

I've tried logging into to the command line with Putty, but I am not able to progress past entering the root username - this is driving me nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to set the permissions for crontab. Login as root and do the following:

chmod 4755 /usr/bin/crontab

Hi,

Thanks for your message - yes, I know this from doing some reading. Problem though is when I login as the root user using Putty, I can't enter the password! Will have to contact the hosting company.
