Question

Following a Google.com result gives "Apache Test Page" Google.co.uk is fine?

Asked by: mikcanavan

This is one of the strangest issues I have encountered.

When finding any site on our server using Google.com - the "Apache 2 Test Page" is shown, but if you search using Google.co.uk it works fine.

If you land on the Apache page and then click on the address bar, and then press enter, the page appears fine!?!?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=fivenines.co.uk - Does not work... Shows the Apache Test

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=fivenines.co.uk - Loads fine...

Has anyone got ANY idea what this could be???

They come up the same for me.  I'd say your local machine or proxy server is caching the old "Apache 2 Test Page".  Try clearing any caches you can.

Thanks for looking, however - I am very sure that it is not a chaching issue, as I have asked people on other ISP's from different Cities aswell. Some of the websites on the server have been live for over 1 year now...

Leeds, UK using PCs with Firefox / IE7 / IE8
London, UK using Mac with Camino / Firefox

Thinking this over....  Why would google give the apache test page?  Are you saying other people get an apache test page?

by: mikcanavanPosted on 2009-09-24 at 11:21:01ID: 25416183

I have absolutely no idea how / where this page comes from...! (obivously the server)

When you land on the Apache test page, the wierd thing is if you go to the address bar (in any of the above listed browsers) and click enter, or "Go" - the proper website loads! It is as if google is sending you to a 'different' port or somthing (I know this is not possible... but I can't think how else to explain it...!)

Maybe 'headers' ? or something similar ? Why is Google.co.uk fine, but Google.COM different ?

If you ping them, what IP do you get?
I get:
74.125.45.105
for BOTH of them.  See what those other people on other IPs get and if your's is the same.  I'm in the US so I'm sure your's are different, but if they are both the same, then something's caching somewhere or maybe there's a static IP route in some .hosts/config file on your router/server that is messed up.

Ha... It must have been a Google problem. Today after a long weekend off - the problem has gone away.

No changes have been made to our server in any way - but everything works as expected.

For your information : Google.com = 74.125.45.100 and Google.co.uk = 74.125.77.104

Thanks for your assistance.
