The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. installing a new kernel.

Hello
I am reading this link on how to install a new kernel in my desktop using Debian
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO/quick_steps.html
I think I need some explanation as I go through this step by step through this process.


/usr/src# ls -l
total 12
drwxr-sr-x    2 root     src          4096 Aug  1 09:18 kernelconfigs
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     src            11 Aug  1 09:30 linux -> linux-2.4.9
drwxr-sr-x    3 root     src          4096 Aug  1 09:38 linux-2.4.9
drwxr-xr-x    7 root     root         4096 Jul 31 03:53 rpm

in the section where it says:

2. Clean : Before doing mrproper below, you may want to backup the .config file.       
bash# cd /usr/src/linux
bash# mkdir /usr/src/kernelconfigs ;
bash# cp /usr/src/linux/.config  /usr/src/kernelconfigs/.config.save;

when I do this last step I get
cp: cannot stat `/usr/src/linux/.config': No such file or directory

There seam to be no pervious step as to create such a file, then why the writer assumes there
is one specially in a newly created directory as linux in this case?
I may have further questions as I go through this subject, I realy want to understand it.
