Replacing a string in multiple files and directories

Hi,

I have a website on one server which is moving to another server, and the directory structures are differenet. Is there a script I can run that will go through (recursively) each file and direcory(s) and change the path?

The path needs to change from:

/home/k4z/public_html/

to

/home/httpd/vhosts/k4zone.co.uk/httpdocs/

I don't think you need to do that, surely you can simply tar up your files on server1
cd /home/k4z/public_html/
tar cvf files.tar *

then copy the tar file onto server2 then

cd /home/httpd/vhosts/k4zone.co.uk/httpdocs/
tar xvf files.tar

...or is there something I'm missing?

No because there are directories outside of public_html too that are used for logging into databases etc, and there will also be more than 1 site possibly. Also, the files within public_html contain paths to other files so they will need modifying too.

something like
cd /home/k4z/public_html/
for file in `find . -print`
do
echo mv $file /home/httpd/vhosts/k4zone.co.uk/httpdocs/$file >> commands.sh
done

When that completes
chmod +x commands.sh
./commands.sh

but that will just move the files wont it? I need the path within the files modified because just moving the files will still not make the site work as the paths within the pages will still be invalid

do you mean that you want file referece link in your HTML code to be changed like:

 <a target="_top" href="/home/k4z/public_html/picture.html" >Picture 1 </a>
will become
 <a target="_top" href="/home/httpd/vhosts/k4zone.co.uk/httpdocs/picture.html" >Picture 1 </a>

OK
for file in `find . -type f`
do
sed 's/\/home\/k4z\/public_html/\/home\/httpd\/vhosts\/k4zone.co.uk\/httpdocs/g' $file > $file.tmp
mv $file.tmp $file
done

the \ are to escape the / in the pathnames.  sed doesn't let you edit files direclty so you have to do the tmp file bit then copy them back.

I think that should work, but it needs testing!!!

sed 's/\/home\/k4z\/public_html/\/home\/httpd\/vhosts\/k4zone.co.uk\/httpdocs/g' "$file" > "$file".tmp
?
