Question

Gnome refresh rate & drivers

Asked by: mixelogj

Hey all!
I have three quick questions regarding redhat linux 73 (kernel 2.4.18).
1). How can i change the xserver's (and gnome's) refresh rate from 59 to 85? I have edited several config files, searched for configurations utilities but with no success.
2). How can i make it reckon my SATA hdd and install lilo to it?
3). How can i make it reckon my on board LAN ethernet adapter? My motherboard is a ASUS NFS7-S (Athlon chipset).

Also, are there any good and easy howtos for kernel recompile? I tried to do it but since i can't install LILO to the SATA hdd (linux can;t see the SATA disk) i have to boot from the setup cd and i don't know if i can boot into a new kernel. If so, how?

Thank you!

2). patch the kernel with libata or upgrade kernel to ~ 2.4.29??  or 2.6.1
1) refresh rate is in /etc/X11/XFree86Config
3) compile kernel with the correct net module

Is there a reason for Redhat 7.3? Fedora core Should recognize Sata.  Fedora is the new redhat free linux distro

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-20 at 13:28:06ID: 11597161

yeah i have to use 7.3 so that a certain program i must use works. It's a long story but i have to stick with rh 7.3

1). That's what i edited. Where exactly? I saw it has some modes and i commented out the ones i don't want it to use, but it still uses them, or at least uses another mode with low refresh rate.
2). That's what i tried doing with no success because i boot from the setup cd which has the old kernel image. Also, i couldn't find where the boot image so i can replace it but that might mess it up.
3). Same as above.

1) i was wrong. not stored there.
    Did you click make default?

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-21 at 01:46:50ID: 11600536

at the kernel recompile? no. I just followed the instructions in the REAME the kernel had, and at the end it tell me to copy the image it created over the image it currently uses.

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-21 at 01:55:57ID: 11600578

i just found out that there is no "default" rule in the make file of the kernel (2.4.26)

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-21 at 05:17:41ID: 11601731

No when you changed it in gnome there is a check mark -- "make default for computer"

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-21 at 05:23:45ID: 11601779

sorry need to be more specific

In regards to the resolution

if you didn't click it then attempt

edit home folder/.gconf/desktop/screen/0
it contains your refresh rate

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-21 at 06:06:25ID: 11602149

sorry I!!! need to be more specific

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-21 at 10:59:53ID: 11605249

there is no "desktop" folder under ".gconf", nor in any other .gnome directory (and ".gconfd") :-/

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-21 at 11:40:21ID: 11605639

home as in the login folder
like
/root
/home/knollbert
/home/mixelogj

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-21 at 11:42:11ID: 11605652

if not there try looking in
/etc/gconfig/gnome/desktop/screen/0

home as in the login folder
like
/root/.gconf/gnome/desktop/screen/0
/home/knollbert/.gconf/gnome/desktop/screen/0
/home/mixelogj/.gconf/gnome/desktop/screen/0

I'll check at home

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-21 at 14:05:14ID: 11607161

there is nothing in there
i should have mentioned earlier that i am using gnome v 1.4
pretty old :-(
any clues?

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-22 at 05:14:42ID: 11611486

if there is nothing at
/etc/gconfig/gnome/desktop/screen/0
I don't know

before compiling kernel run
make menuconfig
Select scsi drivers/low level/Sata
then pick your driver

Make sure you include you network card (preferable not a module) And your Filesystemtype (MUST be in kernel No modules)

I've done the configuration of the new kernel.
My problem is that i cannot boot into the new kernel because i'm using the setup disk (cd) to boot which has the old kernel image. I cannot find where the image of the old kernel is in the filesystem so i can replace it.

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-22 at 05:23:31ID: 11611550

if your booting of the setup disk it will be hard to replace.  how big is the kernel???

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-22 at 05:24:16ID: 11611558

That you created

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-22 at 05:28:18ID: 11611580

try
mkbootdisk 2.4.26

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-22 at 05:38:19ID: 11611655

What SATA controller

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-22 at 07:13:01ID: 11612449

i have an on board SATA controller from by ABIT NFS7-S motherboard. Anyway, i'm more concerned about the refresh rate cause not upgrading the kernel is  fine.
i tried to mkbootdisk command and it does create a disk, which is somehow not bootable...

i have commented out all undesired display modes but it keeps using it's own mode. dunno what to do. i used Xconfigurator several times, specified nvidia Gforce 4 generic driver (which is not true) but i don't see that written in the XF86Config file anywhere.
Also, i tried installing the nvidia drivers but they cannot insert the kernel module for some reason.

Sorry for the delay but I've been exceptionally busy I'll try to figure it out when i get home

no worries. Thanks alot for your time btw!

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-28 at 18:02:52ID: 11662889

is there a path like
/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/desktop/gnome/screen/default/0

OR

/root/.gconf/desktop/gnome/screen/default/0

OR
loginuserpath/.gconf/desktop/gnome/screen/default/0

the file would be
%gconf.xml

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-28 at 18:04:58ID: 11662898

.gconf  would appear by executing
 ls
you would need
ls -a

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-30 at 02:36:08ID: 11675026

none of the mentioned paths exist.
however, when you mention that the "desktop" folder should exist, i find the %gconf.xml file. This file is empty (at least according to pico). Should i put a number there?

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-30 at 05:10:16ID: 11676044

in which path?

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-30 at 05:20:55ID: 11676121

%gconf.xml was in:
/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/
/root/.gconf/
~user/.gconf

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-30 at 05:26:27ID: 11676158

is there a desktop folder in there?

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-30 at 06:19:11ID: 11676644

no :-( not in any of these places

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-07-30 at 06:57:11ID: 11677059

was there anything besides %gconf.xml  in the folders?

by: mixelogjPosted on 2004-07-30 at 16:16:31ID: 11682094

the firt dir has two directories named "apps" and "schemas"
the other two ave two directories each named
"apps" and "%gconf-xml-backend.lock"

by: knollbertPosted on 2004-08-02 at 05:04:34ID: 11692767

I'd check those folders and their sub directories for %gconf.xml and its contents if its not in there I don't know
