The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Diagnosing a freezing Linux/Plesk server

Hello,
For several weeks now we've been facing the most frustrating situation with one of our servers running Plesk 7.0.3 and serving sites and emails for many clients.
What happens is that at what seems random occurences, that server plain freezes. It stops replying, then a browser will indefinitely be saying site loading, and email clients wait for a reply from the server until they timeout. Not a single service including most importantly SSH works at that point, so there is NOTHING we can do to log in and try to see what just happened, or relaunch. We have a "hard reboot" option that totally cuts off the power (UPS) from our datacenter panel even though it does not seem recommanded, and after that the server comes back online and works fine, sometimes for 2 minutes, sometimes for one week. We receive SMS alerts when the server is down but as even SSH does not reply I cannot even have a script from another server log into it and reboot it...
The person in charge of maintaining that server for me seems to have tried a lot of things : cronjobs to check the mailqueue, cropping it when too many bounced messages are stored, turning off the default bounce option that created one more email for any rejected incoming spam, etc. We suspect a spam/virus problem, be it the volume of mails the server could not handle, or another overload-related issue but still if a server could slow down I fail to understand why it could do that. We found a job that apparently rebooted the server on its own (SIM/System Integrity Monitor) and it seemed to me that created the issue, but it was apparently turned off and the issue still occurs.
So my question to solve that nerve-racking issue is does anybody know why a Linux server could freeze like a 5-y old Windows 98 PC, is there a tool or script I could use to find out what's the last thing that happened in it (as the logs do not much it according to our tech guy?) or is there a place where I could find a very advanced Linux tech perso who would diagnose our server and find a solution ?
