The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Mounting drives at Setup, issue with automounting of drives, Fedora 5

Asked by sscotti in Linux Administration

There is hopefully a simple solution to this.  I have a dual boot system running Fedora 5 and Windows XP professional.  When I first installed Fedora it automatically tried to mount the ntfs formatted partitions on my Windows drive.  The drive names are:

20.1 GB Volume
Archived Software

within Nautilus.  However, I can't open the drives and  I don't think they are technically mounted.  I get a message:

"Cannot Mount Volume, you are not privileged to mount this volume", although I think I get that message as root as well.  The permissions say the user is unknown and the permissions are 444.

I then installed the ntfs-3g driver and edited fstab to read:

/dev/hda1             /mnt/windows             ntfs-3g locale=en_US.utf8 0 0 this is the 20.1 GB Volume
/dev/hda5             /mnt/archive            ntfs-3g locale=en_US.utf8 0 0 this is Archived Software

and that works find in terms of reading and writing to the ntfs partition.

My question is:

1.  How can I mount my partiitions so that they be mounted in Nautilus under the drive 20.1 GB and Archived Software

or

2.  How do I at least suppress attempted moutning at boot so they don't show up under 20.1 GB and Archives Software, in which case I can just use the folders mounted under /mnt.

It seems like the system is trying to automount the volume using a different driver.  I want to use the ntfs-3g driver.Start Free Trial
