Unfortunately, I have no desire to learn another distro. I'm sticking with SuSe, and waiting for other suggestions.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI've been making use of a server (retired Proliant running Suse 9) and T1, as well as external services like Postini for spam control, at work for years for my personal web sites, email, FTP, etc. I've been informed that after our company is acquired such usage will be considered inappropriate. I am the IT director, very conversant in Unix but not an expert.
My web sites rely on Apache with PHP and MySQL. Perl is unimportant to me.
I need to move my email (several domains) from a windows based SMTP/POP3 service to another location.
I use FTP infrequently.
My wife will shoot me if I spend too much on a "toy".
My questions (thousands more points available if followup threads are warranted):
1. Would you host your own Linux box at home or use one of the myriad Linux hosting services? I like the cpanel/plesk type simplicity offered by hosting services, but also like the control you only get on your own box. Are there control panel packages available in the open source arena with similar features?
2. If your answer to #1 is to use a hosting service, do you recommend anyone? Given that my budget is not $1200+ US per year, do you recommend anyone else?
3. If your answer to #1 is to roll my own, what packages have you found to work well in a Suse environment for:
3a Email (SMTP / POP)
3b Spam control
3c Control Panels (I like the command line too, but the memory isn't what it used to be)
3d Anti virus (mainly for inbound email)
Please offer your opinions, especially if you have experience with both choices where a choice exists. If you're a Linux wannabe posting google links, please don't waste my time.
Thanks in advance

Have you tried setting up fedora core system with apache perl mysql Postfix Cyrus-imapd web Server all controlled by webmin browser based control Panel all open source software If you don't value your time spent setting up the server then this would be the best way to go but if time is an issue then hiring of a server maybe better for you.
All the best
