Using putty.exe as an SSH terminal (under Windows XP), single quote becomes â

When I run Makefiles on my FC5 Linux using putty.exe as my SSH client, all the single quotes appear as â instead of ' (or maybe it was `)
It really makes the Makefile output hard to read.

Example:
../net_comm2/convert.c:267: warning: unused variable âVoltsâ

This problem didn't exist on the 2.4 kernel.

I have tried every option I can find on putty's setup screens to select an alternate character set to no avail.
Every character map I select, though they do change the symbol that shows in these messages, none of them reverts to the correct character.

Anyone know how to fix this? It isn't deadly but it is an inconvenience and just looks bad.
