Courier IMAP crashes immediately upon start. Courier pop3 works fine.
My mail server had been working for 3 months without a hickup. About 2 weeks ago I had to restart my IMAP daemon because it had stopped. A week later I had to do it again. Now IMAP crashes immediately upon start. I am unable to access my old emails so I cannot just change imap servers unless there is one that uses Maildir. I uninstalled and reinstalled courier imap.
I cannot find any logs with information about the crash.
After starting imap I run telnet localhost 143 and I get.
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
Courier POP3 works just fine so I am pretty sure the issue is with imap.
Thanks for your help

3. Not that coincide with the problem. I keep my server fully patched. I did one about two weeks ago. My update icon says that there are no updates available.
I am pretty sure I had a virus problem because running clamav crashed and reported that my my hard drive was full. After rebooting there was plenty of room.

Did you also check the maillog ? Normally the path is /var/log/maillog

I went to my windows mail client Thunderbird and tried to retrieve mail. I got the following message.
Unable to connect to your IMAP server. You may have exceeded the maximun number of cached connections.
I changed the advanced settings thunderbird to cache only 1 and got the message again. I changed imap configuration to allow 10 conncections per ip yesterday.
I will now go to my Linux server and post the logs after doing this.

Is there a log for imap. Can I change the log level somewhere to get more information?
I found some troubleshooting instructions that say to run telnet 143 localhost. On August 12 I did this.
After attempting to start imap (it never did start, it crashed immediately) I ran telnet localhost 143.
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
I ran clamav last night. Now when I run telnet localhost 143, I get what I expected with imap crashed.
telnet 143 localhost
telnet: localhost: bad port
It still crashes immediately but I can find no answers as to why. I will try to uninstall and reinstall courier imap again.

ASKER
I did the uninstall and reinstall and that changed nothing. Courier imap crashes immediately. Courier pop works fine.
Please post a 'df -h' of your entire file system, so we can look to see if it is a possible space allocation issue. Also post a 'ps -aef' or 'ps auuwx' to what processes are actively running. IMAP depends on a number of services (depending on how it was setup) including postfix, fam/famd, clamav, etc.
ASKER
It appears as if there is plenty of space. Postfix ,fam, clamd and clam-milter are all running.

When telnetting, the syntax is
telnet <hostname> <port>
So it should be "telnet localhost 143" instead of "telnet 143 localhost"
Anyway, I don't believe your courier-imap is crashing (in application bug kind of way) because it isn't visible in the log files. Please post the output of
netstat -aunt | grep LISTEN
That will tell us whether your server is still listening on port 143 and which address it binds the IMAP process to.
Also, find your courier imap configuration file and post it here (maybe just attach it as a file if it is huge with lots of comments). On RedHat-like systems, it is
/etc/courier-imap/imapd.cn f (should be of similar name in Suse).
Good luck.

On RedHat-like systems, it is
/etc/courier-imap/imapd.cn
Good luck.

I see 143 in the netstat output. However when running YAST and checking the status of Courier IMAP after starting, I get the following message. Is some way to see what process is using 143 maybe it is not Courier Imap.
/etc/init.d/courier-imap status returned 3 (program is stopped):
The stuffin imapd.cng does not look familiar at all. I am in Texas and that is not my email :)

According to YAST2 system services never really starts. I went to YAST2 system services and turned off Courier IMAP and Courier IMAP-SSL and still got the same output from netstat with Listening on port 143.
How can I find the IMAP process that is running and kill it so I can start Courier IMAP?

Try this: 'chkconfig --list | grep -i imap' and post what the results are. It could be that two different imap scripts are running and one is taking presidence over the other one.
Another option would be to check via 'lsof' to see what is handling the process, you could do 'lsof | grep LISTEN' to see what is handling the IMAP process.
Some systems have imap running via the xinetd daemon (located in the /etc/xinetd.d/ directory as 'imap). If there is an imap file found, grep it to see if it is enabled or not.

That was the best Linux help I have gotten. And I have had plenty. Thank you so much!
1) What platform/OS distro are we talking about here?
2) What messages are being reported in your messages file? (i.e. /var/log/messages, etc)
3) Has any patches or updates be added during the past few days or weeks?
