Question

problem while working with LVM in linux

Asked by: D_wathi

Dear Sir/Madam:

While installing the OS i had manually done the /opt partition on the 73.3 GB hard disk recently wanted add one more disk of 146GB then thought to increase the /opt size also did the same i,e created the partition using fdisk and then used Logical Volume Management and used the part of 146 gb and assigned to the /opt with this /opt space got increased but later wanted to restore the /opt to the original size which was assigned at the installation time i,e wanted release the space which was assigned from the hard disk 2 (146GB) for this using LVM removed the /opt partition from the second disk but his entirely removed the /opt . later again manually created the /opt under root (/). but over all the problem is what ever the space assigned to the /opt from the second hard disk (146GB) is not able to use . request you to please help me how to release this space and make use for the other partitions. for your reference posted the following...

How did you go about shrinking the fs and reducing the volume group? Might it e that you didn't? Just crreated a new partition/formatted over the old? Would account for the signs of a crashed VGDA you exhibit. You *might* need resort to http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/recovermetadata.html ... which is pretty harsh.
Or rebuild the server entirely (from a backup, of course).

Cheers
