How to cut off the directory path and keep the file name in linux find search

I"m using the linux find command to locate a file. The find command gives the directory and file path and want to cut off the directory path and keep the file name from a find search, how can I accomplish this?

find <your arguments here> -exec basename {} \;

For example:

find /usr/include -exec basename {} \;

# find /opt/sourceFiles -exec basename {} \;
find: missing argument to -exec

Do you put space between basename and {}? (and after {} too)

thanks medvedd, added space correct the problem....

also, i wan to remove the extension name to the basename file also, how can I accomplish this.

It's a little ugly, but:

find /opt/sourceFiles -exec basename {} \; | sed 's#^\(.*\)\.\(.*\)#\1#'

If you have a particular extension, eg: .txt you can do:

find /opt/sourceFiles -type f -exec basename {} .txt \;

otherwise, use the following script

#!/bin/bash
for file in $(find /opt/sourceFiles -type f)
do
  basename ${file%*.}
done
