The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

You want to type :-
cd src

or :-
cd /usr/src

Basically the '/' infront of the directory name means that it is in relation to the root (top) directory but you want to change to the src directory within the usr directory while you are already in usr.

root@asterisk:/usr# cd
root@asterisk:~# cd /usr
root@asterisk:/usr# cd src
root@asterisk:/usr/src# ls -a
.  ..  linux-headers-2.6.24-16  linux-headers-2.6.24-16-server
root@asterisk:/usr/src# cd freepbx
-bash: cd: freepbx: No such file or directory
root@asterisk:/usr/src#

root@asterisk:/usr/src# clear
root@asterisk:/usr/src# cd
root@asterisk:~# /usr/src/freepbx# mysqladmin create asterisk
-bash: /usr/src/freepbx#: No such file or directory

root@asterisk:/usr/src# cd freepbx
-bash: cd: freepbx: No such file or directory
You dont have the 'freepbx' directory.

root@asterisk:/usr/src# cd
root@asterisk:~# /usr/src/freepbx# mysqladmin create asterisk
-bash: /usr/src/freepbx#: No such file or directory

You made an error copying and pasteing the text. You ran the 'cd' command with no parameters which changed back to your home directory. You then tried to enter the '/usr/src/freepbx# mysqladmin create asterisk' command which is oviously nonsense.

Please excuse me if I am a bit blunt but do you have any real knowledge of Linux?
You may well be able to follow a simple script to install Asterisk but unless you know your way around Linux you will encounter problems at some point that you will be unable to solve.

This is solely opinion. I am not a linux expert but have quite a bit of experience setting up Asterisk over and over and over. Call it learning through blunt force trauma.

Is there a particular reason why you want to install Asterisk on Ubuntu? It'd help to know the purpose for the install. Asterisk is extremely processor intensive and running it alongside a GUI-intensive Ubuntu installation will rob CPU cycles that are useless if the server is to be dedicated to Asterisk.

If you're just looking to play around with Asterisk but want Ubuntu, you might have better luck running TrixBox in a virtual machine using something like OpenVZ. Even then, though, you're going to need some linux skills to get it running and working. There's a pre-installed template at http://www.justinshipley.com/trixbox-200-pre-installed-template-added/.

The best/easiest/quickest solution is to find an old unused box and install Trixbox on it. It doesn't have to be a recent machine, so long as it's not doing anything else but the PBX. At that point, you simply download the CD, drop it in, and let 'er rip. Please note, anything on the machine WILL BE WIPED as the Trixbox CD totally kills the hard drive once you give the OK to install. After that, you can config everything a basic * install needs from the web interface.

Personally I hate trixbox. It limits what you can do with Asterisk and hides everything away from you which is fine while it works but when it doesnt it suddenly becomes 10 times harder to diagnose the problem.

05.21.2008 at 07:35AM PDT, ID: 21615499
Absolutely. But when you're first starting out, it definitely makes things easier to get running initially. Then you can break it from there and learn how to fix it.

What is the output of ls -la ? if it's blue it is more a reference to rights than what file type it is.

If you do the above command you should see something like drwx------+ 112  the D in the beginning states its a directory.

Have you tried running your commands as root using the "sudo" command before it?
you could also sudo su to move up to root and stay there untill you are done. Be sure to exit after you are finished, because using root is dangerous.

Finally you could "man chmod" and see if you can add the right for your user to access /src
