The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Problems with a server (linux) writing to a share on another server (Windows)

Tags: Linux, Debian, Debian Etch / Apache 2
Hi,

Im having big problems writing to a share from a Windows based Fileserver with my linux machine. Target is to outsource the files of my webserver to our fileserver (because of Backups, disc space, ..). I am able to mount the share but I don't get my webserver to write data.

What I did:

Fileserver: Windows 2003 R2 is member of a domain
I created a share website$
Sharing rights: Everyone -> Full access
Security rights: Domain user WEBUSER has full control and he is owner of the directory.

Webserver : Linux Debian Etch with Apache 2 / PHP (Standalone, no member of the domain)

I mount the share as follows:

mount -t smbfs -o username=WEBUSER,password=geheim //FILESERVER/website$ /var/www/website

The command works well because "ls -al /var/www/website/" shows me:

drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 2008-05-19 14:47 html

As root I can write data, but as there is no write permission (r-x) the webserver (which runs under "www-data" user) is unable to do so. I guess the problem is "mount" related because WEBUSER has all rights which are transferred to root (rwx). How can I mount the share and give everybody (or just www-data) full write control on this folder? chmod 777 /var/www/website doesn't help.

Please, I am thankful for every hint

Best regards,

Who owns the /var/www/website folder? Have you tried chown -R www-data /var/www/website and chgrp -R www-data /var/www/website? Also, chmod -R 664 /var/www/website

If this doesn't work, what is the error given when you try creating a file in /var/www/website while logged in as www-data?

Have you tried to specify your domain name :
mount -t smbfs -o username=domain\WEBUSER,password=geheim //FILESERVER/website$ /var/www/website

Maybe the login failed and you are connected with anymous account.

@steezy: (commands run with root user)

WEBSERVER:/var/www# ls -al
drwxr-xr-x  6 root root 4096 2008-05-20 10:14 .
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 2008-05-20 08:47 ..
drwxr-xr-x  1 root root 4096 2008-05-21 09:29 website

WEBSERVER:/var/www# chown www-data ./website/ -R
chown: changing ownership of `website/html/xmlrpc/client.php': Operation not permitted
... MESSAGE FOR EVERY FILE IN DIRECTORY ...
chown: changing ownership of `website/': Operation not permitted

WEBSERVER:/var/www# chgrp www-data ./website/ -R
chgrp: changing group of `website/html/xmlrpc': Operation not permitted
... MESSAGE FOR EVERY FILE IN DIRECTORY ...
chgrp: changing group of `website/': Operation not permitted

WEBEPSA01:/var/www# chmod -R 664 website/
WEBEPSA01:/var/www# ls -al
drwxr-xr-x  6 root root 4096 2008-05-20 10:14 .
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 2008-05-20 08:47 ..
drwxr-xr-x  1 root root 4096 2008-05-21 09:29 website

WEBEPSA01:/var/www# su www-data
WEBEPSA01:~$  cd website/
WEBEPSA01:~/website/$ touch test
touch: cannot touch `test': Permission denied

@kiolgc:

Yes I tried that. Giving "Domain\WEBUSER" results in Permission Denied. The fileserver has only successful logins for "WEBUSER".

OK, instead of mounting the share as root, you can mount it as www-data, but first you have to set smbmnt suid root. Do this as root: # chmod u+s `which smbmnt`

umount the share, then change back to www-data user and do:
mount -t smbfs -o username=WEBUSER,password=geheim //FILESERVER/website$ /var/www/website

I just tried this in my domain and it worked. Also, if you want to authenticate as a domain account, you have to use DOMAIN\\user (two backslashes) since in the linux shell, backslash is used to escape characters.

WEBSERVER:/home/ltpsaeadmin# chmod u+s /usr/bin/smbmnt
WEBSERVER:/home/ltpsaeadmin# su www-data
WEBSERVER:/home/ltpsaeadmin$  mount -t smbfs -o username=WEBUSER,password=geheim //FILESERVER/website$ /var/www/website/
mount: only root can do that

The solution is very simple. I was searching an answer to the mount problem when I find out the parameters fmask and dmask in the option list. Setting fmask to 666 an dmask to 777 helped me out.

The complet mount call is :

mount -t smbfs -o username=WEBUSER,password=geheim,fmask=666,dmask //FILESERVER/website$ /var/www/website

thx for your help steezy

Best regards
