select the one you want (probably JDK 6 Update 16) select the linux version, download it (2 choices, go for the rpm, as you are on centos) and install that with rpm -i

I would save the file then run "file" on it. "file" works by examining the file contents (rather than the name suffix) and has a surprisingly large database of application types (it surprises me from time to time anyway).
I've included a few examples of what you can expect below. If it comes back "binary data", you're out of luck
