Question

Nagios on Debian

Asked by: linuxpig

Friends,

I am seeking to run the plugins and nrpe in regards to Nagios on Debian server. I have found sites with nagios.deb packages but instead of i386 and x86_64 rpms, i find i386,ia64, amd64, .deb packages.

Are the Debian packages by processor type instead of 32 and 64 bit? And for Redahat they have for EL4 and EL5. Does it matter if it is Debian 3,4,5? Please let me know how this works for Debian and where can i get nagios plugin and nrpe .deb files. No tar file suggestions please.

Thank you my friends

Your system should automatically install the correct CPU image type. AMD64 is for normal 64-bit systems. IA64 is for high end 64-bit servers.

skca54, the site you mentioned also separates the packages by architechture as i asked originally, as shown on http://packages.debian.org/etch/nagios-plugins.So am i to assume that Debian nagios packages are downloaded by processor type? Also, if i download a package for i386, will this work on Debian v3, v4, and v5 i386?

Do you know of reliable sites to download .deb files for all Debian architechtures and versions?

Thank you

You should be able to use apt-get install xxxxx.
This will automatically choose the correct CPU type as well as the correct package for your version of debian.

apt-get isnt an option for me. i requier to download the .deb packages prior. The sites i have seen list the .deb packages as i have mentioned in my original post. So if anyone can provide answers to my original question it would be much appreciated. I feel that we are proceeding off target.

OK. You need to download the correct .deb file for your CPU architecture and your version of debian. Debian supports quite a few different CPU architectures. You need to use the correct one. However  the installation media you used should show you what architecture you are using.

As i have feared, we have gotten way off base with what i originally asked. So permit me to repost it here in the hope that an answer to my original post can be achieved. Here it is:

The debian packages are created by individual processor architecture, i.e. Sparc, i386 PC, x64 PC, PPC (Mac).
The creator of the package should identify which version of debian it is intended for. This is relevant for pre-requisites of the package.

by: skca54Posted on 2009-09-29 at 07:04:25ID: 25449127

What version of debian are you running and what architecture i.e. What CPU?

Here is link for recent nagios-plugins download depending on architecture: http://packages.debian.org/unstable/net/nagios-plugins-standard - Notice the up to date package is still listed as 'unstable'
Here is link for a nagios nrpe depending on architecture and debian version: http://packages.debian.org/lenny/nagios-nrpe-server - more up to date versions are still 'unstable'
There is often a large gap of time between updates and packages being created and tested which is why it is generally more reliable to compile your own upto date package which will also be guaranteed to work with your architecture and debian version.
