Browse All TopicsWe have almost 6 dom0's servers running XEN with a lot of guests debian . We've backup domU's apps using tar scripts for sevreal years without any problems. I want to ask experts:
NOTE: We're looking for open source tools first, but any commercial product is allowed.
1. Is it better to backup domU's XEN entire image and copy in an external server?
1.1. Pros? Cons? What I need for this? Requisites?
2. We've domU's on (dom0's) LVM and other using normal image to disk (NOT LVM). We know LVM sapnshots do the the work on LVM images. How can we backup non-LVM domU's image? is it possible?
3. Do you prefer to backup entire image or apps separately for every domU?
4. Any other ideas to backup XEN domU's?

since you lean towards your environment being homogenous you would gain a lot from deduplication.
If you can wait, the ZFS will eventually have dedupe built in but otherwise there are quite a lot of commercial applications and appliances/gateways available.
While thinking about ditching the tape we are about to buy something from the DataDomain DD500 series but we have over a hundred virtual machines and a wee bit under a hundred physical servers so your mileage may vary.
