Have you changed your exim config at all since the system stopped working?
late - that contains all of your settings in an "easy to read" format. Any changes to this file require you to run update-exim4.conf which then checks for any errors/problems and modifies the actual running exim config.
routine you could lose changes to your mail daemon.
late for a configuration problem - I imagine update-exim4.conf should find it.
In Debian there is a mail configuration template file - /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.temp
Do note however if you made any direct changes to the exim running config and didn't use the template/update-exim4.conf
Unknwon ACL means that you have a problem with one of you access control lists - does update-exim4.conf give you any errors? Check your acl_check_data ACL in /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.temp
