The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

USB devices not detected on home built comp running F8
Tags: EVGA, nForce, 650i 775 T1, motherboard on comp
Here's the basic problem:  I have a custom-built machine running F8, kernel 2.6.24.5-85 and it doesn't detect anything USB.  I included my complete system profile below.

When I first built this computer about 5 months ago, USB keyboard/mouse didn't work.  I attributed that to needing drivers loaded for first use.  I should note though that my external USB drive did work.  One day, I'm not sure how, the USB keyboard mouse worked, and it worked for like 2 weeks.  Then, as quickly as it came, it went.  Again, not sure how.  This time though, nothing worked; no keyboard, no external HD, no nothing.  That's where I'm at today.  Even when I plug in a flash drive that has a read light on it, the light doesn't come on at all (the drive works fine on other comps) like it's not even getting power.

I've tried researching this online, but all I can find on this sort of problem is for older kernels that don't have the USB-required modules loaded.  I'm not super familiar with hardware stuff in Fedora, but here's a snippet from lsmod that includes the usb modules (I think).

[root@localhost robb]# lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
uhci_hcd               30561  0
ohci_hcd               28997  0
ehci_hcd               39501  0

I checked BIOS to make sure USB is enabled, and it is.  I can't figure out if the problem is with the computer (specifically the mobo) or the OS.  Other than that, I'm out of ideas.  I can run any sort of diagnostics that would shed more light on this.  Thanks in advance for any sort of help you can give.

You should first verify that lspci sees your USB controllers.  Do this command in a terminal window: "lspci|grep USB".  There should be several lines that look similar to this:

[root@help ~]# lspci|grep USB
00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 01)
00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 01)
00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 01)
00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 01)
00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 01)

You may want to take a look at the lsusb command from a terminal window.  It will tell you what devices the USB controller sees.  If lsusb is missing on your system do a "yum install usbutils" from a terminal window.  Here is what mine displays with a Dell USB mouse hooked up to the system:
[root@help ~]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 413c:3010 Dell Computer Corp. Optical Wheel Mouse
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

As usual you should also check /var/log/messages and /var/log/dmesg to see if it says anything about USB devices.  There a lot of things that could cause this problem.

Thanks for the tips.  Ya, I know a lot of things could cause the problem which is a big reason I'm having problems; I don't know how to isolate the problem.  OK so I'll include output after the 'executive summary':  USB controllers are there, the controller does not see my USB flash drive.  The log (messges) shows the controller interface loading at boot time, but that's the last USB reference it has.

[root@localhost robb]# lspci|grep USB
00:0b.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP51 USB Controller (rev a3)
00:0b.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP51 USB Controller (rev a3)

[root@localhost robb]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

try running from a live knoppix cd, it supports usb, so you can test if your hardware is working :

Quick update: Sorry I didn't respond sooner... finals week.  That's a good call... I'm downloading the CD now.  Also will try a Fedora Live CD, since that's the distro I use.  That could be even more revealing.  Thanks again!

K so I tried the Knoppix cd and two Fedora 9 Live cds (i386/x64, my os is x64) and none of them work.  So is the problem probably hardware-related?

sorry, F8 not 9

if you still have warranty, have a replacement.
you can also try pci to usb cards (not sure in this case if it will work though)
