With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? How to make openvpn do more than ping?

I have a fedora 11 machine set up on my network as a openvpn server.  clients can connect and even ping hosts on the lan.  But that is all, no telnet, RDP, share drives.  I have opened the linux firewall to commonly used services like telnet, ssh, http.  All software is up to date.
