The "du" command should be run by root user, "*" should be replaced by "/".

While running the df -h command incorrect disk space size is showing.
df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/simfs 9.8G 1.7G 3.0G 37% /
Here the total size is wrong. How to correct this?
Running du -sch* shows the disk space usage correctly.

Frst of all df shows your allocated file-system size while du shows the occupied space. So they might not be necessarily the same. This is being said since you're using /dev/simfs you must be using OpenVZ and or Virtuozo. In this case this is because of the quota management. Sometimes then virtual servers have been defined with maximum usage quota and one of your virtual servers might temporarily get over quota. In this case when you reduce your disk usage the Virtualization solution might not allow you to use more than the maximum available size.
