I do not like to "init 5 " because I do not have control and all I want is x to start.
I run startx and do my thing.
Now I want to return the system to the non gui state.
What is the oposite of startx ?

'CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE'
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will stop X. If you are running from a graphical login, this will send you back there. Most graphical login managers allow you to choose to drop to a console login instead. If you press Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] you will usually get a text login, but without logging you out of X.

try CTRL+ F5/F6...
you should be able to go to the CLI
